SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Erma M. Davis of Peoria, who passed away
4on April 6, 2013; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Erma Davis was born on April 2, 1930, in
6Clarksdale, Mississippi, to E.M. and Cora (Spillman) Moore; she
7married Charles W. Davis; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Erma Davis became the executive director of the
9George Washington Carver Community Center in Peoria in 1966,
10and during her 28 years of service she spearheaded such notable
11programs as Carver Center Day Care, the Optometry and Dental
12Program, the Computer Education Program, the Annual Christmas
13Basket Giveaway, the Senior Citizens Program, and the College
14Bound For Excellence Program; with the help of Methodist
15Medical Center, she created the idea of a Carver Family Health
16Center to provide medical services for the residents of
17Peoria's south side; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Erma Davis had a firm belief in human rights and a
19concern for all people; she was one of 12 people appointed by
20the American Health Care System to select an exemplary program
21that provided health care for disadvantaged people; she was one
22of the founding members of the Peoria Chapter Urban League

1Guild, later becoming the national president; she was the first
2African American female to serve on the board of directors of
3Methodist Medical Center, and was appointed to Ronald Reagan's
4Task Force on Hunger; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Erma Davis was a member of First United Methodist
6Church for more than 40 years, where she served as a lay person
7to the United Methodist Conference and was involved with the
8Loaves and Fish Feeding Program; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Erma Davis was preceded in death by her parents;
10her husband; and 2 brothers; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Erma Davis is survived by her children, Sharon
12(Allen) Kilgore, Robert (Carmen) Davis, Michele Davis, and Lisa
13Davis; her goddaughter, Dr. Lona C. Bibbs; her grandchildren,
14Aaron (Amanda) Kilgore and Evan Kilgore; her great-grandchild,
15Alexander Davis Kilgore; her sisters, Ruby (Kenneth) Williams
16and Gaye (Alvin) Wilson; her brother, Eugene M. Williams; and
17many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20Erma Davis, and we extend our sincere condolences to her
21family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
22further
