SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The history of chess spans more than 1,500 years,
3and the earliest predecessors of the game originated in India,
4before the 6th century AD; from India, the game spread to the
5Middle East and subsequently expanded to Southern Europe; in
6Europe, chess evolved into roughly its current form in the 15th
7century; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Chess is a recognized sport of the International
9Olympic Committee and international chess competition is
10sanctioned by the World Chess Federation (FIDE); and
 
11    WHEREAS, Chess is sanctioned in Illinois at the high school
12level by the Illinois High School Association, where an annual
13State tournament determines a victor; and
 
14    WHEREAS, National Chess Day is October 12, 2013; and
 
15    WHEREAS, The United States 113th Congress has recently
16expressed its support for the designation of St. Louis,
17Missouri, as the 'National Chess Capital' of the United States
18to enhance awareness of the educational benefits of chess and
19to encourage schools and community centers to engage in chess
20programs to promote problem-solving, critical thinking,
21spatial awareness, and goal setting; and

1    WHEREAS, The House of Representatives and the Senate of the
2Illinois General Assembly physically compete against each
3other in an annual softball game to determine the triumphant
4chamber, which in many of these contests the House has
5demonstrated its greater athletic proficiency; therefore, be
6it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL
8ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we proclaim our
9intellectual superiority by challenging the members of the
10Illinois House of Representatives to a chess tournament; and be
11it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That the Senate shall host the chess tournament
13and, upon acceptance of terms by the House, the results shall
14affirm our claims that we are the utmost mentally astute
15Chamber of the Illinois 98th General Assembly; and be it
16further
 
17    RESOLVED, That the General Assembly Chess Tournament shall
18also be utilized to promote and enhance awareness of the
19educational benefits of chess among school-aged children and to
20encourage all schools and community centers in Illinois to
21engage in chess programs to promote problem-solving, critical
22thinking, spatial awareness, and goal setting.
