SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Margery W. Steele, who passed away on June 20, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Margery Steele was born on July 17, 1920, in Michigan City, Indiana, to George and Marion (nee Whiteley) Phelan; she graduated from Kingston High School in Kingston, New York, and attended New York City Business College; and

WHEREAS, Margery Steele worked for the War Department in the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the Central Intelligence Agency; she served in North Africa, Egypt, and Greece; she married Harold Steele on October 12, 1946, in a civil ceremony, followed by a military ceremony in Vienna, Austria on October 13, 1946; and

WHEREAS, Margery Steele was an active member of First Congregational Church of Peru and a past member of Dover Congregational Church; she participated in other clubs and organizations, including Steele Farms as secretary-treasurer, Dover Congregational Church as a Sunday school teacher, the board of the American Red Cross, the Dover Grade School Board, the Bureau County United Way, and as a Camp Fire Girls Leader; she hosted students and was on the board for the American Field Service and the Bureau Valley Business and Professional Women's Club, where she was woman of the year in 1980; and

WHEREAS, Margery Steele was preceded in death by her parents; her 3 brothers; and her sister; and

WHEREAS, Margery Steele is survived by her husband of 67 years, Harold; her children, Greg (Sandra) Steele, Linda (Noel) Hobbs, Becky (Tom) Hall, and Susan (Mike) Teslow; her AFS-USA foreign exchange daughters, Dr. Akke Van der Zijpp and Kyoko (Shinobo) Tanaka; her grandchildren, Kristopher (Dawn) Hall, Alanna (Evan Rapoport) Hobbs, Cpt. Chad (Dr. Michelle) Foreman, Katie (Michael) Baldwin, and Rachel Foreman; her foreign grandchildren, Karin and Jumi Yamada; her great-grandsons, Jacob Foreman and Ieppi Tanaka; and several nieces and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Margery W. Steele, and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Margery Steele as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
