2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Margery W. Steele, who passed away on
4June 20, 2013; and
5    WHEREAS, Margery Steele was born on July 17, 1920, in
6Michigan City, Indiana, to George and Marion (nee Whiteley)
7Phelan; she graduated from Kingston High School in Kingston,
8New York, and attended New York City Business College; and
9    WHEREAS, Margery Steele worked for the War Department in
10the Office of Strategic Services, which later became the
11Central Intelligence Agency; she served in North Africa, Egypt,
12and Greece; she married Harold Steele on October 12, 1946, in a
13civil ceremony, followed by a military ceremony in Vienna,
14Austria on October 13, 1946; and
15    WHEREAS, Margery Steele was an active member of First
16Congregational Church of Peru and a past member of Dover
17Congregational Church; she participated in other clubs and
18organizations, including Steele Farms as secretary-treasurer,
19Dover Congregational Church as a Sunday school teacher, the
20board of the American Red Cross, the Dover Grade School Board,
21the Bureau County United Way, and as a Camp Fire Girls Leader;
22she hosted students and was on the board for the American Field

1Service and the Bureau Valley Business and Professional Women's
2Club, where she was woman of the year in 1980; and
3    WHEREAS, Margery Steele was preceded in death by her
4parents; her 3 brothers; and her sister; and
5    WHEREAS, Margery Steele is survived by her husband of 67
6years, Harold; her children, Greg (Sandra) Steele, Linda (Noel)
7Hobbs, Becky (Tom) Hall, and Susan (Mike) Teslow; her AFS-USA
8foreign exchange daughters, Dr. Akke Van der Zijpp and Kyoko
9(Shinobo) Tanaka; her grandchildren, Kristopher (Dawn) Hall,
10Alanna (Evan Rapoport) Hobbs, Cpt. Chad (Dr. Michelle) Foreman,
11Katie (Michael) Baldwin, and Rachel Foreman; her foreign
12grandchildren, Karin and Jumi Yamada; her great-grandsons,
13Jacob Foreman and Ieppi Tanaka; and several nieces and nephews;
14therefore, be it
16ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
17Margery W. Steele, and extend our sincere condolences to her
18family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to the family of Margery Steele as an expression of
22our deepest sympathy.
