SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Martha M. Berg of North Aurora, who passed away on June 27, 2013; and

WHEREAS, Martha Berg was born on April 8, 1947, in Frankfort, Kentucky; her parents were James H. and Martha Maddox; and

WHEREAS, Martha Berg graduated from Sullivan Indiana High School in 1965; she subsequently attended Indiana State University, where she earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education in 1968 and completed her master's degree in elementary education in 1971; and

WHEREAS, Martha Berg served as an educator for 35 years; she spent her first 26 years at Sherrard Elementary in Sherrard and her last 9 years in education were spent at East Aurora Illinois School District 131; after retiring in 2005, she carried her love of teaching into assisting future teachers at Olivet Nazarene University, Aurora University, and the National Head Start Family Literacy Center; and

WHEREAS, Martha Berg was an active member of her community; she served in numerous organizations, including the Child Welfare Society, Delta Kappa Gamma, and P.E.O.; she was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she was involved in the Chancel Choir and 10-Fold Contemporary Christian Group and served as a deacon and member of various committees; and

WHEREAS, Martha Berg is survived by her loving husband of 17 years, Richard K. "Dick" Berg Jr.; her children, Laura (Eric) Kies, Tyler (Brooke) Knowles, Rick (Audra) Berg, and Diane (Brian) Gillaspie; her grandchildren, Maddox and Kennon Kies, Carter and Reid Knowles, Jackson and Jillian Berg, and Hannah Gillaspie; and her special brothers, Jay (Carolyn) Maddox and Bill Maddox; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Martha M. Berg; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Martha Berg as an expression of our sympathy.
