SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
50 ILCS 205/25 new

    Amends the Local Records Act. Provides that a Local Records Commission may not destroy public records concerning complaints alleging misconduct by law enforcement officers without permission from the Attorney General.

1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Local Records Act is amended by adding
5Section 25 as follows:
 
6    (50 ILCS 205/25 new)
7    Sec. 25. Complaints of law enforcement misconduct. A public
8record concerning complaints alleging misconduct by law
9enforcement officers, including, but not limited to, audio
10records, videos, notes, statements, findings of facts, and
11decisions relating to alleged misconduct by law enforcement
12officers shall not be destroyed by the Local Records Commission
13unless the Commission has requested and received approval to
14destroy such public records from the Attorney General. For
15purposes of this section, "law enforcement officer" shall
16include State Police officers and police officers of a unit of
17local government.
