HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, 2015 marks the 150th anniversary for Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College is a private liberal arts college, fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and established in 1865 to fill the need for an institution of higher learning in central Illinois; and

WHEREAS, A charter for the new college, then known as Lincoln University, was secured from the Illinois General Assembly on February 6, 1865; ground was broken for University Hall, the College's first building, just 6 days later on Abraham Lincoln's birthday; and

WHEREAS, The foundation was completed and the cornerstone was laid by September of 1865; instruction for men and women began in November of 1866, with the first commencement in 1868 with 3 graduates; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College now has campuses in Lincoln and Normal, developing a tradition of personal education long before the concept became universally popular; and

WHEREAS, Lincoln College's mission is to uniquely empower students to realize their full potential; the College lives up to its motto of "Experience Outstanding" with a faculty philosophy, student services, and low faculty-student ratio that provides individualized attention to make the difference between failure and success for many students; and

WHEREAS, The Lincoln College experience is more than offering academic programs that are second to none, as a number of its varsity sports teams have won national championships; its other extracurricular activities provide students with opportunities to pursue their passions and learn life and leadership skills outside the classroom; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we recognize and congratulate the students, administration, and faculty of Lincoln College in commemoration of its sesquicentennial celebration; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the leadership at Lincoln College as an expression of our esteem and respect.
