HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Katrina Adams on becoming
4the first African-American to be named CEO of the United States
5Tennis Association (USTA) on January 1, 2015; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Katrina Adams is only the fourth woman to hold the
7position and the first professional athlete; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Katrina Adams was born in Chicago and developed a
9love of tennis at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Boys Club on the
10West Side of Chicago; she played throughout the City of
11Chicago, including at the Prairie Tennis Club, the Hyde Park
12Tennis Club, and the Midtown Athletic Club; she attended
13Whitney Young High School and went on to attend Northwestern
14University, where she majored in communications; while at
15Northwestern, she helped lead the Wildcats to a Big Ten
16Championship in Tennis in 1986; she was an NCAA All-American in
171986 and 1987 and she was the first African-American to become
18NCAA doubles champion in 1987; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Katrina Adams played for 12 years on the Women's
20Tennis Association tour, where she was ranked as high as No. 67
21in singles and No. 8 in doubles; she captured 20 career doubles
22titles; and

1    WHEREAS, After retirement, Katrina Adams served as a
2national coach for the United States Tennis Association Player
3Development division; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Katrina Adams has been inducted into the
5Northwestern Hall of Fame, the USTA Midwest Section Hall of
6Fame, the Chicago District Tennis Hall of Fame, and the Black
7Tennis Hall of Fame; and
 
8    WHEREAS, While CEO of the USTA, Katrina Adams will focus on
9growing the development of young players in African-American
10and Hispanic communities; she will also continue to run the
11Harlem Junior Tennis and Education Program; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14congratulate Katrina Adams on becoming the first
15African-American to be named CEO of the United States Tennis
16Association; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That we recognize Katrina Adams on all of her
18accomplishments and wish her well in all her future endeavors;
19and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
