SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Charles R. "Cork" Walgreen III of Lake
4Forest, who passed away on September 26, 2016; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was born in Chicago on
6November 11, 1935 to Mary Ann Leslie and Charles R. Walgreen
7Jr.; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III started his 58-year
9Walgreens career in 1952 as a stock boy after school and on
10vacations; he later entered the University of Michigan in Ann
11Arbor, where he earned his bachelor's degree in pharmacy in
121958; he returned to Walgreens in 1959 as a pharmacist at the
13store on Western Avenue in Chicago; and
 
14    WHEREAS, In 1963, Charles Walgreen III was named
15Administrative Assistant to the Vice-President of Operations
16and was elected to the company's board of directors; he served
17as District Manager from 1965 to 1966 and as Western Regional
18Director and Midwestern Regional Director from 1966 to 1968; he
19was named Vice-President in 1968, President in 1969, President
20and Chief Executive Officer in 1971, and Chairman and CEO in
211976; he served as Walgreens Chief Executive Officer until his
22retirement in January of 1998; he remained Chairman until

1August of 1999; he retired from the board of directors as
2Chairman Emeritus in 2010; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was a member of the American
4Pharmaceutical Association, Director and Chairman of the
5National Association of Chain Drug Stores, Director of the
6Illinois Retail Merchants Association, and Director of Junior
7Achievement of Chicago; he was a member of many other
8charitable and civic organizations; and
 
9    WHEREAS, In 2004, Charles Walgreen III donated $2 million
10to his alma mater, the University of Michigan College of
11Pharmacy, to establish a professorship focusing on researching
12the socioeconomics of health care policies, regulations, and
13ethics; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III was preceded in death by his
15parents and his son, Tad Alexander Walgreen Sr.; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Charles Walgreen III is survived by his wife,
17Kathleen B. Walgreen; his sons, Charles Richard Walgreen, Kevin
18Walgreen, Leslie Ray Walgreen, Chris Patrick Walgreen, Tad
19Alexander Walgreen, and Carl Allen Jr.; his daughters, Brooke
20Julia Walgreen, and Jorie Allen Grassie; 19 grandchildren; one
21great-grandchild; his sister, Leslie Ann Walgreen Pratt; his
22brother, James Alan Walgreen; and several nieces and nephews;

2    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL
3ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
4Charles R. "Cork" Walgreen III, and extend our sincere
5condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
6him; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to the family of Charles Walgreen III as an
9expression of our deepest sympathy.
