SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Sheldon Sternberg of Chicago, who passed away on April 9, 2015; and

WHEREAS, Sheldon Sternberg was born in Chicago on February 27, 1923; while attending DePaul University in 1942, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and was assigned to the 390th Bombardment Squadron; he was sent to Europe, where he served as navigator for bombing missions over Germany and France; he also participated in Operation Chowhound, a series of humanitarian missions that included food drops over the Netherlands; and

WHEREAS, Sheldon Sternberg returned to Chicago after his military service and joined his wife's family's business, Best's Kosher Sausage Company, which later produced hot dogs served at Wrigley Field and other landmark Chicago venues; he was President of the company in 1993 when it was sold to Sara Lee; and

WHEREAS, Sheldon Sternberg was an avid Chicago Cubs fan; and

WHEREAS, Sheldon Sternberg and his wife, Elaine, had 4 children, Susan Berger, Michael Sternberg, Nancy Kushner, and David Sternberg; 12 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-NINTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Sheldon Sternberg, and extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sheldon Sternberg as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
