SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
225 ILCS 85/22c new

    Amends the Pharmacy Practice Act. Requires the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation to adopt rules requiring pharmacy prescription systems, including, but not limited to, electronic systems, to contain mechanisms to require prescription discontinuation orders to be forwarded to a pharmacy, to require patient verification features for pharmacy automated prescription refills, and to require that automated prescription refills notices clearly communicate to patients the medication name, dosage strength, and any other information required by the Department governing the use of automated dispensing and storage systems. Provides that the rules shall ensure that discontinued medications are not automatically dispensed to a patient by a pharmacist or by any automatic refill dispensing system whether prescribed through electronic or paper prescriptions. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning regulation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Pharmacy Practice Act is amended by adding
5Section 22c as follows:
 
6    (225 ILCS 85/22c new)
7    Sec. 22c. Automated prescription refills. The Department
8shall adopt rules requiring that pharmacy prescription
9systems, including, but not limited to, electronic systems used
10in this State, contain mechanisms to require prescription
11discontinuation orders to be forwarded to a pharmacy, to
12require patient verification features for pharmacy automated
13prescription refills, and to require that automated
14prescription refills notices clearly communicate to patients
15the medication name, dosage strength, and any other information
16required by the Department governing the use of automated
17dispensing and storage systems. These rules shall ensure that
18discontinued medications are not dispensed to a patient by a
19pharmacist or by any automatic refill dispensing systems
20whether prescribed through electronic prescriptions or paper
21prescriptions.
 
22    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
