HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Reverend Marcethia Lynette Scales, who passed away on May 13, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales was born in Chicago to Marcel Martin and Margaret Peterson on May 2, 1961; early in life, she taught herself how to play the piano and keyboard, and she committed to her faith at the First Baptist Church in Melrose Park under the leadership of the Reverend Henry McNelty; she graduated from John Marshall High School and then pursued a degree in mathematics at the Florida Institute of Technology; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales was employed at the McDonald Corporation in Oakbrook for many years; she later moved on to Hendrickson Bumper & Steel, a Bohler Company, in Joliet, where she was a devoted and enthusiastic employee; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales joined the Christian Unity Missionary Baptist Church (CUC) in Bellwood under the leadership of Pastor Willie B. Dugan in 1993; she was ordained as a minister of the Gospel on October 24, 2001; with her strong passion to serve at her home church, she taught Sunday School, was a member of the Ministerial staff, a prayer warrior, and president of the choir, as well as part of the King Daughters Ministry, and the Shepherd's Ministry; through her sermons, prayers, and songs, she uplifted many spirits and led many closer to their faith; she never hesitated to go beyond the call of duty to serve and assist whenever and wherever she could; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales was awarded the King Daughters Remarkable Woman Award in 2017; she enjoyed sewing, embroidery, and spending time with her family; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales was preceded in death by her grandparents, Isaac and Lucille Underwood; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Scales is survived by her mother, Margaret Holmes; her son, James Sean Scales; her sisters, Rosalind Holder, Eva (Darryl) Holder, and Jimmette (Robbie) Barkley; her special friend, Brandon Barker; her CUC family; and her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Reverend Marcethia Lynette Scales and extend our sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Reverend Scales as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
