HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Chicago
4Police Officer Samuel Jimenez, who was killed in the line of
5duty on November 19, 2018 at the age of 28; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Officer Jimenez grew up in the Edison Park
7neighborhood of the City of Chicago and built a family of
8Illinoisans; he, his wife Crystal, and their three young
9children regularly attended Mass at the Chapel of St. Joseph at
10the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines; and
 
11    WHEREAS, From his childhood onward, Officer Jimenez
12expressed a desire to build a life in law enforcement; he
13joined the Chicago Police Department in 2017 in full knowledge
14of the current state of public safety in America's
15third-largest city; in November of 2018, he had served his time
16of probation and had pinned on the star of an officer of the
17department; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Officer Jimenez was assigned to the 2nd Police
19District (Wentworth); he was responding to a radio call of
20shots fired on Chicago's South Side around the emergency room
21of Mercy Hospital; a gunman had begun to kill professionals and
22trainees in and around the hospital; and

1    WHEREAS, Officer Jimenez ran into the line of fire to
2defend the hospital and save the lives of civilians, in line
3with the highest traditions of the American police; and
 
4    WHEREAS, As a consequence of this split-second decision,
5Officer Jimenez is End of Watch (EOW); and
 
6    WHEREAS, Mourners at the funeral mass of Officer Jimenez
7included Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois Governor Bruce
8Rauner, and main celebrant Cardinal Blase Cupich of the
9Archdiocese of Chicago; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Officer Jimenez leaves behind his wife, Crystal
11Jimenez, and three children, daughters, Ebony and Angelina, and
12son, Julian, who now have memories to remind them of what
13heroism in action looks like; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16mourn the loss, while on duty, of Officer Samuel Jimenez of the
17Chicago Police Department; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That when we pass by the Illinois Police Officers
19Memorial, which stands adjacent to the door we use to enter and
20leave the Illinois State Capitol each day we are in session, we

1will think of Officer Jimenez and his fellow Illinois police
2officers who have paid the ultimate price of service to their
3fellow citizens; and be it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That we recognize that the police officers of
5Illinois put their lives on the line every day and every night
6for the safety and security of their loved ones and their
7fellow citizens; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to Crystal Jimenez, as an act of sorrowful memory of
10and homage to the heroism of Officer Jimenez, a peace officer
11and a defender of Chicago and of the State of Illinois.
