HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Food allergies affect nearly 15 million people in the United States, including one in 13 children; and

WHEREAS, Research shows that food allergies are increasing in the United States, particularly among children; and

WHEREAS, Shellfish, fish, milk, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat are the eight foods that cause the majority of food allergies; and

WHEREAS, Common symptoms of food allergies include hives, vomiting, diarrhea, respiratory distress, and swelling of the throat; and

WHEREAS, More than 200,000 emergency room visits are caused by food allergies each year; and

WHEREAS, Scientists are still looking for a cure for food allergies; and

WHEREAS, Every person with a food allergy must strictly avoid the food they are allergic to, which can best be done with the support and awareness of people around them; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we declare May 14 through May 20, 2017 as Food Allergy Awareness Week in the State of Illinois to help raise awareness and understanding of food allergies.
