| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Wanda Helen (Harris) Mattea of Maryville, | 4 | | who passed away on October 12, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Mattea was born in East St. Louis on May 15, | 6 | | 1929 and later moved with her family to rural Caseyville; she | 7 | | graduated from Collinsville High School in 1947 and married | 8 | | Carl W. Mattea in East St. Louis on September 24, 1947; she | 9 | | earned a Bachelor of Arts, a master's degree, and an | 10 | | administrative certification at Southern Illinois University; | 11 | | and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Mattea taught English and then became a | 13 | | district wide counselor; she later became a high school | 14 | | guidance counselor; she worked for the Unit 10 School District | 15 | | for 28 years; she was most proud of taking part in the "PUPS" | 16 | | program; upon her retirement, she became office manager of the | 17 | | Mattea Law Firm for 17 years; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, As a young girl, Wanda Mattea was an avid reader | 19 | | which continued with her many friends and acquaintances at the | 20 | | Collinsville Library; she often read as many as five books per | 21 | | week; she was a member of the Blum House Book Club, Friends of | 22 | | the Library, St. Stephen Catholic Church, and the Illinois |

| 1 | | Retired Teacher's Association; she was a guest speaker at | 2 | | numerous education conferences; she prided herself on walking | 3 | | two miles per week with the Mileage Club at St. John's Church; | 4 | | she and her husband enjoyed traveling to Italy to visit family; | 5 | | and | 6 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Mattea was a lover of art, travel, books, | 7 | | politics, pets, sports, and interacting with her family; she | 8 | | was known locally as something of an expert in antique dolls | 9 | | and would only show her prize collection to those with whom she | 10 | | had a special connection and totally trusted; her inquiring | 11 | | nature caused her to participate in the Collinsville Library | 12 | | genealogical program, where she was able to trace her family's | 13 | | immigration from Scotland to Baltimore in 1790, through New | 14 | | Harmony, Indiana, the Civil War, to Wayne County, and finally, | 15 | | East St. Louis; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Mattea was preceded in death by her husband, | 17 | | Carl; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Wanda Mattea is survived by her sons, Bruce Mattea | 19 | | and Roger (Janet) Mattea; her cherished grandchildren, Justin | 20 | | B. Mattea, Julia B. Giacoletto, Trevor Mattea, and Chelsea | 21 | | Mattea; her great-grandson, Ian Giacoletto; many nieces, | 22 | | nephews, cousins, and friends; her close friend and | 23 | | sister-in-law, Michelina M. Hoad; and her beloved chocolate |
