SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Nanci Steele of Des Plaines, who
4passed away on July 11, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Nanci Steele was born in Chicago on September 16,
61946; she was raised in Evanston; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In the 1970s, Nanci Steele began working in the
8retail wine industry at Sola's Wine & Spirits, named Chicago's
9Best Wine Store by the Chicago Tribune wine columnist Craig
10Goldwyn; she was the first woman in Chicago to be a wholesale
11wine industry sales representative and worked for Judge &
12Dolph; for a short period, she wrote the wine column for the
13Chicago Sun-Times after the passing of their regular columnist
14Arnold Landsman; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Nanci Steele was the first woman to win and a
16two-time winner of Geja's Annual International Professional
17Wine Tasting Contest from 1980 to 1981 before she retired from
18the event; she was a founding member of Chicago's Dames
19d'Escoffier, an organization of professional wine industry
20women dedicated to furthering wine and food appreciation; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Nanci Steele obtained her master's degree in

1Special Education after retiring from the wine industry and
2taught at Hanson Park Elementary in Chicago for 10 years until
32001; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Nanci Steele was the daughter of the late Robert
5E. and Marjorie (Marsau) Ryan; the wife of James Steele; the
6mother of Barbra Versino (Rich Spychalski) and the late Robert
7Versino; and the grandmother of Jonathan Spychalski, Emma
8Spychalski, and the family dog Reiley; therefore, be it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11Nanci Steele and extend our sincere condolences to her family,
12friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to the family of Nanci Steele as an expression of our
15deepest sympathy.
