HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the City of Highland on the occasion of the city's 175th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, The City of Highland was founded by Swiss immigrants in 1831, but was originally named Helvetia (New Switzerland); it was in 1836, when Joseph Semple, a member of the Illinois House of Representatives from Alton, pushed to change the name to Highland because the area reminded him of where he grew up in Scotland; this push led to the formal renaming of the town to Highland in 1837; and

WHEREAS, Louis A. Latzer was an early resident of Highland; he perfected the process of condensing milk, which made it more accessible to the masses; he is known as the "Father of Pet Milk"; and

WHEREAS, The hard working people of Highland have also achieved what many cities never do, effectively accommodating several industries while still keeping their small town vibe; and

WHEREAS, The City of Highland also offers many other excellent resources, such as exceptional healthcare facilities, great educational opportunities, and a cost of living 8% below the national average; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the City of Highland on the occasion of their 175th anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the people of Highland as an expression of our respect and esteem.
