HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of the
4City of Highland on the occasion of the city's 175th
5anniversary of its founding; and
 
6    WHEREAS, The City of Highland was founded by Swiss
7immigrants in 1831, but was originally named Helvetia (New
8Switzerland); it was in 1836, when Joseph Semple, a member of
9the Illinois House of Representatives from Alton, pushed to
10change the name to Highland because the area reminded him of
11where he grew up in Scotland; this push led to the formal
12renaming of the town to Highland in 1837; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Louis A. Latzer was an early resident of Highland;
14he perfected the process of condensing milk, which made it more
15accessible to the masses; he is known as the "Father of Pet
16Milk"; and
 
17    WHEREAS, The hard working people of Highland have also
18achieved what many cities never do, effectively accommodating
19several industries while still keeping their small town vibe;
20and
 
21    WHEREAS, The City of Highland also offers many other

1excellent resources, such as exceptional healthcare
2facilities, great educational opportunities, and a cost of
3living 8% below the national average; therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we congratulate the City of Highland on the occasion of their
7175th anniversary; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the people of Highland as an expression of our
10respect and esteem.
