HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives wish to congratulate Galewood Community Church United Church of Christ on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church was founded in 1912, with a total congregation of 19 members; it was the only church that served the Galewood area for several years; and

WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church was expanded 3 different times throughout its history; at the beginning it was a gathering space only, then in 1917, a chapel was built, and years later a community wing with full basement, full kitchen, and several classrooms was constructed; and

WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church chose to be Open and Affirming, when it was unpopular for churches to select that distinction; it selected its first African American pastor, Rev. Dr. Tasha M. Brown, in September 2012; and

WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church has had many youth programs such as Youth Outreach Services with Rev. Stan Davis; it had the Executive Director of Community Renewal Society serve as its associate pastor for many years, Rev. Dr. Calvin Morris; and

WHEREAS, Galewood Community Church has always had a difficult time, and each year it was not always expected to survive its struggles, but it continues on; it has always been on the cusp of firsts, taking stands, and moving forward; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Galewood Community Church United Church of Christ on its 100th anniversary; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the members of Galewood Community Church United Church of Christ as an expression of our esteem and respect.
