HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are pleased to recognize the Department of
4Neurosurgery at the University of Illinois, Chicago for its
5numerous achievements and contributions to the State of
6Illinois; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In September 2007, the Department of Neurosurgery
8at the University of Illinois, Chicago formed the only brain
9aneurysm support group in the State of Illinois with the
10assistance of brain aneurysm survivor Janet Sutherland, nurse
11practitioner Kate Walsh, and neurosurgeon Dr. Sepideh
12Amin-Hanjani; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Department Head and Professor Dr. Fady Charbel,
14along with his faculty and staff, recognized the need for peer
15support during the challenging time of being diagnosed with a
16brain aneurysm; they could see that patients were unaware of
17the facts and had questions that might remain unanswered; and
 
18    WHEREAS, According to the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an
19estimated 6 million people in the United States have an
20unruptured brain aneurysm, or approximately 1 in 50 people; a
21brain aneurysm ruptures every 18 minutes and are fatal in 40%
22of cases; and

1    WHEREAS, The UIC Department of Neurosurgery, established
2in 1939, ranks first in the State for treating the most
3aneurysm cases and understands the need for extraordinary
4patient support; the department has demonstrated this through
5innovative state of the art treatment as well as its lifesaving
6care and compassion for brain aneurysm patients and survivors;
7neurosurgeons at UIC have treated more than 4,000 brain
8aneurysms and continue to have some of the most skilled
9neurosurgeons to treat brain aneurysms; and
 
10    WHEREAS, The Chicago Chapter of the Brain Aneurysm
11Foundation will hold its second annual Survivor in the City
12benefit on September 30, 2011; therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
14NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we recognize the Department of Neurosurgery at the University
16of Illinois, Chicago and their work with brain aneurysm support
17groups in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to the Department of Neurosurgery at the University
20of Illinois, Chicago as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
