SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to learn of the death of Richard Bettin Stalling of Peoria, who passed away on June 12, 2011; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stalling was born on November 9, 1937, in Washington, D.C.; his parents were the late Bettin and Ruth Stalling; he married Judith Stalling in the Iolani Palace in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1965; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stalling graduated from Bethesda Chevy Chase High School in 1954; he subsequently earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Northwestern University in 1959, his master's degree in psychology from Roosevelt University in 1965, and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Hawaii in Honolulu in 1969; and

WHEREAS, In 1969, Richard Stalling and his wife moved to Peoria after Richard accepted a position as a professor of psychology at Bradley University; he went on to teach at Bradley University for 38 years until his retirement in 2007; while at Bradley, he served as chair of the psychology department for eight years, represented the psychology department in the University Senate, and worked with Vice President Gary Anna and Councilman Roger Worman to create the entrance to Bradley University; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stalling was an active member of several organizations, including the Central Illinois Landmark Foundation, the Greenway Project, and the Moss Bradley Residential Association, where he led the process to preserve the ornamental lighting on Moss Avenue; he also reviewed restaurants for the West Bluff Word under the pseudonym Melvin Shirver; and

WHEREAS, Richard Stalling is survived by his wife, Judith Stalling, and his children, Samantha Stalling (Amber Hawk Swanson) and Vanessa Stalling (Sean Graney); therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Richard Bettin Stalling; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Richard Stalling as an expression of our sympathy.
