1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, The Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes
3 Region will participate in Aviation Maintenance Technician
4 Day, an event honoring aviation maintenance technicians from
5 all around the world; and
6 WHEREAS, This event will advance public appreciation for
7 the significant and vital contributions of aviation
8 maintenance technicians; and
9 WHEREAS, Aviation maintenance technicians are all too
10 often unsung heroes whose achievements are overlooked; and
11 WHEREAS, One such unsung hero of aviation was Mr. Charles
12 Edward Taylor; and
13 WHEREAS, On April 30, 1903, at the Wright Brother's
14 Bicycle Shop in Dayton Ohio, Charles Edward Taylor began
15 working on the first engine built for Orville and Wilbur
16 Wright's airplane named The Flyer; and
17 WHEREAS, Mr. Taylor pioneered uncharted theories of
18 engine design by using only a lathe and drill press to
19 construct a four-cylinder piston engine weighing 179 pounds
20 and producing 12-horse power in just six weeks; and
21 WHEREAS, On the morning of December 17, 1903, at the base
22 of Kill Devil Hills, south of the village of Kitty Hawk,
23 North Carolina, the Wright brothers made a mark in aviation
24 history by successfully flying the first powered airplane;
25 and
26 WHEREAS, This incredible achievement would not have been
27 possible if it were not for Charles Edward Taylor, the first
28 aviation mechanic in powered flight, the man who built and
29 maintained the first aircraft engines; and
30 WHEREAS, The Federal Aviation Administration Great Lakes

1 Region is working to bring attention to the significance of
2 Charles Edward Taylor's achievements, and to the
3 contributions of the aviation maintenance industry, by
4 recognizing May 24th, Mr. Taylor's birthday, as Aviation
5 Maintenance Technician Day; therefore, be it
6 RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
7 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8 we hereby proclaim May 24 as Aviation Maintenance Technician
9 Day in the State of Illinois; and be it further
10 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
11 presented to Cecelia L. Hunziker, Regional Administrator for
12 the Great Lakes Region of the Federal Aviation
13 Administration.
