1 HOUSE RESOLUTION
2 WHEREAS, Hales Franciscan High School, a Catholic,
3 all-male, college prep school serving over 300 students, was
4 founded in 1962 by the Archdiocese of Chicago and the
5 Franciscan fathers to serve the African-American community
6 and is celebrating its 40th Anniversary; and
7 WHEREAS, Since 1963, over 90 percent of Hales
8 Franciscan's graduates have gone on to college and are
9 presently working as judges, doctors, teachers,
10 entrepreneurs, lawyers, military officers, actors, business
11 executives, governmental appointees, media personalities, and
12 in a host of other professional and labor capacities; and
13 WHEREAS, In 1985, Hales Franciscan was recognized by the
14 U. S. Department of Education as one of the outstanding high
15 schools in the United States for having produced a
16 Presidential Scholar and numerous National Merit Scholars;
17 and
18 WHEREAS, Since 1993, Hales Franciscan High School has
19 operated as a Catholic High School, governed by a lay board
20 of committed volunteers and supported by tireless efforts of
21 administrators, faculty, priest, alumni, coaches, and
22 committed parents; and
23 WHEREAS, Under the administration of Bob Anderson,
24 President, and Bernard Murray, Principal, the school remains
25 a beacon of hope in the Bronzeville community located on the
26 southside of Chicago in the State of Illinois; and
27 WHEREAS, On Saturday, March 15, 2003, Hales Franciscan
28 became the first Chicago area Class A school since 1985 to
29 capture the boys basketball championship, exactly 10 years
30 after Hales' second place finish in the 1993 Class A boys
31 basketball tournament; therefore, be it

1 RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
2 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
3 we recognize Hales Franciscan High School as one of the
4 outstanding high schools in the State of Illinois; and be it
5 further
6 RESOLVED, That we congratulate the boys basketball team
7 of Hales Franciscan High on winning the State Class A boys
8 basketball championship; and be it further
9 RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to Bob Anderson, President, Bernard Murray,
11 Principal, and each of the members and coaches of the Hales
12 Franciscan High boys basketball team as a token of our
13 respect and esteem.
