HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives offer our sincere congratulations to the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa in honor of its 100th anniversary; and

WHEREAS, The American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa was founded in 1904 and is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States; and

WHEREAS, This organization was originally founded to eradicate tuberculosis and has expanded its mission to include lung disease in all forms, with a special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control, and environmental health; and

WHEREAS, The many successes of the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa are achieved through the work of thousands of committed volunteers and staff; and

WHEREAS, Today, the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa fights lung disease through research, education, and public advocacy; and

WHEREAS, Through the revolutionary Call Center, the general public can get immediate answers to lung health questions; and

WHEREAS, The Call Center has answered nearly 10,000 Illinois and Iowa phone calls relating to lung health, and has been embraced by the American Lung Association offices throughout the country as the National Call Center; and

WHEREAS, The asthma education and smoking cessation programs created by the American Lung Association have been recognized as the most effective and innovative tools available; and

WHEREAS, The groundbreaking research done by this organization is focused on practical and relevant issues relating to asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and patient care; and

WHEREAS, This research has led to major breakthroughs in the health industry, such as the use of lifesaving surfactant therapy for thousands of premature infants with respiratory distress syndrome; and

WHEREAS, The American Lung Association's Illinois-Iowa advocacy programs work to influence the development and enforcement of laws and regulations related to lung health at the national, state, and local levels; and

WHEREAS, This organization has helped to educate the Illinois General Assembly about important issues and policies related to lung health; and

WHEREAS, Through its policies and mission-driven activities, the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa has worked to utilize diversity outreach strategies as a tool in the fight against lung diseases that affect minority groups; and

WHEREAS, The American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa has informed and educated the public about the impact and prevention of lung disease by disseminating information through all available channels; and

WHEREAS, It has mounted successful legislative efforts to protect our children from tobacco interests, as well as protecting the air we breathe; and

WHEREAS, We recognize the 100 years of service the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa has provided to communities; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we do hereby offer our congratulations to the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa.
