HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Al Scott
4 on Thursday, March 3, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Alvin R. Scott was born on November 20, 1946, in
6 Chicago; he graduated from Emil G. Hirsch High School in 1965,
7 where he was an All City football player and wrestler; he
8 graduated from Central State University in 1969 with a B.S. in
9 health and physical education, where he was an All American
10 football player in 1966; he graduated from Governors State
11 University in 1976 with an M.A. in human learning and
12 development; and
 
13     WHEREAS, Mr. Scott played for the Cincinnati Bengals for a
14 short time; he was the sixth-winningest football coach in
15 Illinois high school history, with a record of 262 wins and 130
16 losses; and
 
17     WHEREAS, He leaves a lasting mark on Public League
18 football, establishing his record in 33 seasons at Simeon High
19 School, where he coached from 1972 to 2004; he is the only
20 coach in Public League history to lead his team to the city
21 championship game in four decades; the Simeon Wolverines also
22 made four Prep Bowl appearances under his leadership; and
 
23     WHEREAS, Mr. Scott was one of the pioneers in bringing
24 respectability to Public League football, and he had the best
25 winning percentage in Public League history; and
 
26     WHEREAS, He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity,
27 Inc., and throughout his career, he won a number of accolades,
28 including being named "Football Coach of the Week" by the
29 Chicago Bears in 1996, National High School Coach of the Year
30 for the Midwest Region in 1997, and he was inducted into the

1 Illinois Football Hall of Fame in 2001; during his career, he
2 coached three high school athletes who eventually played for
3 the NFL; they are John Mitchell, Bill Johnson, and Ivory McCoy;
4 and
 
5     WHEREAS, The passing of Al Scott has been deeply felt by
6 many, especially his wife, Lola G. Scott; his son, Alvin R.
7 Scott, Jr.; his grandson, Alvin III; and his mother and
8 stepfather, Margerie and James Harbut; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 we mourn the passing of Coach Al Scott, and we extend our
12 deepest sympathy to his family, friends, students, colleagues,
13 and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
14     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15 presented to his family as an expression of our sincere
16 condolences.
