HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives learned with sadness of the death of Lela
4 Virginia Wilson of Chicago on September 3, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Ms. Wilson was born February 28, 1920, in
6 Westpoint, Mississippi, to Robert and Elizabeth Wilson; and
 
7     WHEREAS, She attended Booker T. Washington Elementary
8 School in Memphis, Tennessee; after moving to Chicago, she
9 attended DuSable High School and Wilson Junior College; and
 
10     WHEREAS, She retired from the Department of Aging as the
11 leading Manpower Specialist; she received the Senior
12 Achievement Award from Operation Able in 1983; upon retirement,
13 she was a volunteer at Whitter Elementary School in Great
14 Falls, Montana; after moving back to Chicago, she became a
15 volunteer for the American Cancer Society; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Ms. Wilson ran her first marathon in 2001 at the
17 age of 81; she ran a 5K race in April of 2005, and she won her
18 last race on September 3, 2005; and
 
19     WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her parents; her
20 siblings, Thomas and Robert Wilson; her daughter, Katherine
21 Howard-White; her sons, Thomas and James Howard; and her
22 grandson, Darryl Howard; and
 
23     WHEREAS, The passing of Lela Wilson is felt by all who knew
24 and loved her, especially her children, Phyliss Porter (Lloyd
25 S.), Linda Ester, and Theresa Elizabeth Wilson; her
26 grandchildren, Thomas Howard (Valarie), Kenneth L. Porter
27 (Holli), Kerry Porter, Karen Porter Morrison, Lela Howard,
28 Joyce Ester, Kelli T. Porter Tapp (Alonzo), Rickey Howard,
29 Keith Porter (Nicole), and Mark Howard; her twelve

1 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; her
2 cousins, Ruth Hawkins and Marlene Scruggs; and her friends in
3 Montana and the Lake Vista Apartments; therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6 we mourn the passing of Lela Wilson and extend our sincerest
7 condolences to her family, friends, and community; and be it
8 further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to her family as an expression of our deepest
11 sympathy.
