| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are honored to recognize foundations that | 4 |
| provide exemplary service to the citizen's of this State; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The Woodlawn Organization has been providing a | 6 |
| wide variety of programs and services to its community for over | 7 |
| 40 years; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, The mission of The Woodlawn Organization is to | 9 |
| advance the African-American community and others in the areas | 10 |
| of economic empowerment, political action, advocacy, and | 11 |
| social welfare by providing training, education, counseling, | 12 |
| and development services; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Since its inception, The Woodlawn Organization | 14 |
| has been at the forefront of community based, grassroots | 15 |
| organization across the nation; the membership body is | 16 |
| comprised of 115 interest groups such as block clubs, churches, | 17 |
| businesses, tenant councils, parent groups, and homeowners | 18 |
| associations; this group addresses vital issues on planning and | 19 |
| development, community safety, education, health and human | 20 |
| resources, employment, recreation, transportation, and | 21 |
| housing; the team of organizers also coordinate community | 22 |
| meetings, rallies, block clubs, parties, back-to-school | 23 |
| celebrations, and voter education and registration; and
| 24 |
| WHEREAS, The Woodlawn Organization offers an employment | 25 |
| and training program in collaboration with the Illinois | 26 |
| Department of Human Services that provides job opportunities to | 27 |
| economically disadvantaged individuals throughout the Chicago | 28 |
| area; the programs identify and provide an individualized | 29 |
| combination of soft skills training and support services that | 30 |
| give participants the opportunity to obtain and keep a job; and

| WHEREAS, The Woodlawn Organization also offers an early | 2 |
| childhood development center and an infant day care center; the | 3 |
| organization has two facilities as an alternative to in-patient | 4 |
| psychiatric treatment for adults with a history of chronic | 5 |
| mental illness; and it offers substance abuse services that | 6 |
| include two levels of treatment to assist participants in | 7 |
| regaining control over their lives; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, In addition to these services, The Woodlawn | 9 |
| Organization offers in-home counseling services, HIV/AIDS | 10 |
| testing and supportive services, peer and family support | 11 |
| groups, court advocacy, family preservation centers, family | 12 |
| case management, direct emergency assistance, and | 13 |
| transportation; therefore, be it
| 14 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 15 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 16 |
| we commend The Woodlawn Organization on its invaluable service | 17 |
| to the citizens of the State of Illinois; and be it further
| 18 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 19 |
| presented to Dr. Leon Finney, Jr., the Chairman and CEO of The | 20 |
| Woodlawn Organization.
