HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives
3 learned with regret of the death of Thomas J. Merrion on
4 December 5, 2005; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Merrion was involved in and coordinated a
6 number of civic, religious, and social activities; and
 
7     WHEREAS, He began serving on the West Chicago City Council
8 to represent residents of the Third Ward in 1987; and
 
9     WHEREAS, While an alderman, Mr. Merrion was involved in a
10 number of landmark decisions that shaped the future of the City
11 of West Chicago, including the decision to construct a water
12 treatment plant as well as the creation of a downtown TIF
13 District to spur redevelopment efforts; and
 
14     WHEREAS, He served 14 years on the West Chicago City
15 Council; and
 
16     WHEREAS, When he was not serving as an alderman or working
17 as a right-of-way agent for the DuPage County Division of
18 Transportation, where he retired after 20 years of service, he
19 was active in Boy Scout Troop 615, serving in many capacities
20 since 1991, the last ten years as Scoutmaster; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Whether it was taking the scouts on the Grant
22 Pilgrimage in Galena or to summer camp in Oxford, Mr. Merrion
23 was instrumental in helping the children in his troop learn
24 life skills and become more civic-minded community members; and
 
25     WHEREAS, He was active in other community organizations
26 including Vietnow, West Chicago Clean and Proud, the Railroad
27 Days Committee, and the Thorium Action Group; and

1     WHEREAS, After retiring from DuPage County, Mr. Merrion
2 served as a substitute high school teacher, continuing his
3 commitment to enriching the lives and minds of children; and
 
4     WHEREAS, He left behind the legacy of a wonderful man who
5 was committed to his family, his community, and his country,
6 and who has been and will continue to be an inspiration to all
7 who have known him; therefore, be it
 
8     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
9 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10 we mourn the passing of Thomas J. Merrion, and we extend our
11 sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and community;
12 and be it further
 
13     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
15 sympathy.
