| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with sadness of the death of Dr. Mildred Louise Sammons | 4 |
| of East St. Louis on February 9, 2005; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Sammons was born on January 15, 1917; she was | 6 |
| the daughter of the late Leslie Lee and Louise Hopkins and a | 7 |
| native of Hopkinsville, Kentucky, where she completed her | 8 |
| elementary and high school education; after graduating from | 9 |
| high school, she attended Kentucky State College in Frankfort, | 10 |
| Kentucky, where she completed a two-year teacher course; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, While still a young woman, she moved to East St. | 12 |
| Louis in 1945 and, shortly thereafter, married Doree Thomas; in | 13 |
| 1947, she established the Mildred Louise School for Teachers; | 14 |
| in May 1959, the school was incorporated and became known as | 15 |
| the Mildred Louise Business School, Inc.; some years later, the | 16 |
| school was again renamed as the Mildred Louise Business | 17 |
| College; she served as an Instructor, Administrator, and | 18 |
| President of the college; the Mildred Louise Business College | 19 |
| was an accredited institution with only certified instructors; | 20 |
| and
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Sammons devoted her life to education and | 22 |
| molding the minds of young women and men from all walks of life | 23 |
| to help them achieve the highest level of professional | 24 |
| excellence in their chosen careers; and
| 25 |
| WHEREAS, In addition to being a lifelong, active member of | 26 |
| St. Paul Baptist Church, she also was an active member of many | 27 |
| civic, business, and political organizations, such as the Sigma | 28 |
| Gamma Rho Sorority, the Women's Crisis Board of Directors, the | 29 |
| St. Clair County YWCA, Delta Pi Epsilon Graduate Honor | 30 |
| Fraternity, SIU-Edwardsville Board of Directors, Community | 31 |
| Hospital of East St. Louis, the National African-American |

| Association for Colored People, and the Women United Political | 2 |
| Organization; she was also inducted into the "Who's Who of | 3 |
| Business and Professional Women"; and
| 4 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Sammons received honors, recognition, awards, | 5 |
| and citations - internationally, nationally, and locally - for | 6 |
| her excellence in service to the community and several | 7 |
| organizations; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, She was an excellent role model for adults and | 9 |
| young people in the East St. Louis community; her achievements | 10 |
| and dedication exemplified what one can accomplish in a | 11 |
| lifetime while successfully combining the roles of mother, | 12 |
| professional woman, wife, and grandmother; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, She was preceded in death by her husband; her | 14 |
| brothers, Egbert and George Hopkins; and her sister, Elizabeth | 15 |
| Robinson; and
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Mildred Louise Sammons is felt | 17 |
| by all who knew and loved her, especially her daughter, Jettan | 18 |
| Thomas Anderson; her grandchildren, Darrick L. Anderson, Jr., | 19 |
| and Jocelyn Louisa Anderson; her nephews, Donald, Darrell, and | 20 |
| Edwin Hopkins; her niece, Diane Hopkins; her Thomas Family | 21 |
| relatives, Robert Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Jones, Edith | 22 |
| Mickles, Janette Owens, Tyrone (Beverly) Washington, Leroy | 23 |
| (Charlotte) Jackson, Barbara Mickles, Stephanie Mickles, and | 24 |
| Mr. and Mrs. Lou Mickles; and a host of former students, close | 25 |
| friends, and professional and civic affiliations; therefore, | 26 |
| be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 28 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 29 |
| Dr. Mildred Louise Sammons and extend our sincerest condolences | 30 |
| to her family, friends, and community; and be it further
