| SENATE RESOLUTION
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., | 4 |
| President of Alcorn State University, on August 19, 2006; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, He held a B.A., a J.D., and a Ph.D. degree from | 6 |
| Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and an MBA from | 7 |
| Governors State University, University Park, Illinois; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow's administrative experiences included | 9 |
| serving as president of the Chicago Board of Education and Dean | 10 |
| of the College of Business at Chicago State University; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, He was named president of Alcorn State University | 12 |
| on August 24, 1995, where he remained committed to increasing | 13 |
| the percentage of minority graduate students by doubling their | 14 |
| enrollment; he increased the public's awareness of the value | 15 |
| and the contributions of land-grant universities; he | 16 |
| established a faculty research incentive program to enhance | 17 |
| research in the sciences; he established programs that focus on | 18 |
| preparing more minority students for success in the STEM | 19 |
| disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and | 20 |
| mathematics; and he led Alcorn to become a national leader in | 21 |
| the production of African-American baccalaureate graduates in | 22 |
| the life and agricultural sciences; and
| 23 |
| WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow was active in many organizations and | 24 |
| held board memberships on the Board of Directors of the | 25 |
| National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant | 26 |
| Colleges (NASULGC), the Southern Association of Colleges and | 27 |
| Schools (SACS), the National Association for Equal Opportunity | 28 |
| in Higher Education (NAFEO), the Capital Financing Board for | 29 |
| HBCUs, and the Congressional Award Board; he was also active in | 30 |
| the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Youth Success | 31 |
| Foundation, and the Illinois Committee on Black Concerns in |

| Higher Education; and

| WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., has been | 3 |
| deeply felt by many, especially his life partner, Lezli | 4 |
| Baskerville; his daughter, Maya Bristow; his sister, Annie | 5 |
| Peoples, and her children, Shameece and James; his brother, | 6 |
| David Bristow; his god sister, Mary E. Young; and his many | 7 |
| uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it
| 8 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | 9 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that together with his | 10 |
| family, his friends, and the citizens of this State and this | 11 |
| great nation, we mourn the passing of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., | 12 |
| and we extend to his family our sincerest condolences; and be | 13 |
| it further

| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 15 |
| presented to his family as an expression of our deepest | 16 |
| sympathy.
