| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the people of | 4 |
| Cicero as they celebrate the town's sesquicentennial year; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Cicero is an incorporated town in Cook County; | 6 |
| Cicero is named for the town of Cicero, New York, which in turn | 7 |
| was named for Marcus Tullius Cicero, the Roman orator; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, In 1857 fourteen settlers met to organize a local | 9 |
| government, which became the town of Cicero; and | 10 |
| WHEREAS, Cicero has won the Governor's Home Town Award five | 11 |
| times, including an award for the Cicero Youth Commission and | 12 |
| their work overseeing the lessening of youth crime in the | 13 |
| community; and
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, The 1980s and 1990s saw a heavy influx of Hispanic | 15 |
| (mostly Mexican and Central American) residents to Cicero; | 16 |
| Cicero was mainly a Czech or Bohemian town at one time; Cicero | 17 |
| most recently is seeing a new influx of residents, mostly | 18 |
| Puerto Rican and Polish; it has also has seen a revival in its | 19 |
| commercial sector, with many stores and businesses moving into | 20 |
| the community; and

| WHEREAS, Cicero has claimed the right to be called the | 2 |
| hometown of author Ernest Hemingway; Ernest Hemingway was a | 3 |
| Nobel Prize winner in literature and was the author of such | 4 |
| works as The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls ; | 5 |
| and | 6 |
| WHEREAS, Cicero residents remember when the town was | 7 |
| centered around Western Electric Company, which employed | 8 |
| 40,000 people, more than the population of the community; the | 9 |
| company closed its doors in 1983; and
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, The town has always been known for quality | 11 |
| schools, wonderful parks, and a great community library; | 12 |
| therefore, be it
| 13 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 14 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 15 |
| congratulate the people of Cicero on this sesquicentennial year | 16 |
| and wish them the best in the future; and be it further
| 17 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 18 |
| presented to Larry Dominick, Town President, as a symbol of our | 19 |
| respect.
