| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, Melvin R. Holden served in the United States Army | 3 |
| during World War II; he was sent to the European theater in | 4 |
| 1942; he served in England prior to the D-Day invasion of | 5 |
| Normandy; after the invasion, he searched for suspected | 6 |
| poisonous gas rumored to be hidden throughout the European | 7 |
| continent; he returned to the United States on December 26, | 8 |
| 1945; and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Mauck Lane and its bridge has a great significance | 10 |
| to Melvin R. Holden and his family; the road was named after | 11 |
| Mr. Holden's grandfather, who bought the street as a road to | 12 |
| the coal mine he worked in; his mother gave birth to him on an | 13 |
| acre of land that now holds the middle of the Mauck Lane | 14 |
| bridge; he built a home on Mauck Lane in 1957, where he raised | 15 |
| his 5 children; and
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, During construction of the Mauck Lane bridge, | 17 |
| Melvin R. Holden assisted the bridge workers by providing lunch | 18 |
| spots under a maple tree and drinks from the house's well; | 19 |
| after construction was completed, he would regularly pick up | 20 |
| trash on the road during his walks; and
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, After Melvin R. Holden retired from Central | 22 |
| Foundry in 1976, he moved to San Diego; despite the great |

| distance, he returned often to visit his relatives who lived on | 2 |
| Mauck Lane; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Melvin R. Holden's dedication, both to his country | 4 |
| as a soldier and to his fellow citizens as a steward of the | 5 |
| Mauck Lane bridge, should be commended and praised in the | 6 |
| highest fashion; therefore, be it
| 7 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 8 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 9 |
| the Mauck Lane bridge over Interstate 74, west of Danville in | 10 |
| Vermilion County, be designated the Melvin R. Holden Mauck Lane | 11 |
| Bridge; and be it further
| 12 |
| RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation | 13 |
| is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with | 14 |
| State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs | 15 |
| giving notice of the name; and be it further | 16 |
| RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be | 17 |
| delivered to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of | 18 |
| Transportation; the Secretary of the Illinois Department of | 19 |
| Transportation; and the Vermilion County Board.
