| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to express | 3 |
| their sincere condolences to the family and friends of | 4 |
| Charlotte T. Reid of Aurora, who passed away on January 25, | 5 |
| 2007; and
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid was born in Kankakee on September | 7 |
| 27, 1913; her parents were Edward and Ethel (Stith) Thompson; | 8 |
| and
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid attended the Aurora public | 10 |
| schools, and spent two years at Illinois College in | 11 |
| Jacksonville; she received honorary degrees from John Marshall | 12 |
| Law School in Chicago, Illinois College, and Aurora University; | 13 |
| and
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid studied voice in Chicago under | 15 |
| Louise Gilbert and was a featured vocalist on the NBC radio | 16 |
| show, Don McNeil's Breakfast Club, singing under her | 17 |
| professional name, Annette King; she also sang on Club Matinee | 18 |
| and Sunday Dinner at Aunt Fannie's, both NBC radio shows; and
| 19 |
| WHEREAS, After the death of her husband, Frank Reid in | 20 |
| 1962, Charlotte Reid was chosen to replace him on the ballot as | 21 |
| the nominee for the 15th Congressional District Representative |

| seat; she won the seat and was re-elected four times; while in | 2 |
| Congress she served on the Appropriations Committee, Interior | 3 |
| and Insular Affairs Committee, Public Works Committee, House | 4 |
| Republican Policy Committee, and the Standards of Office and | 5 |
| Conduct Committee; in 1964 she addressed the Republican | 6 |
| National Convention in San Francisco and in 1968 addressed the | 7 |
| Convention in Miami; and | 8 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid was a friend to President Kennedy, | 9 |
| President Johnson, and President Nixon; she served in Congress | 10 |
| with future President Gerald Ford and also remained friends | 11 |
| with him throughout the years; and
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, During her fifth term in Washington, Charlotte | 13 |
| Reid was appointed to the Federal Communications Commission | 14 |
| (F.C.C.) by then President Nixon; she served as the | 15 |
| commissioner of defense and was placed in charge of following | 16 |
| developments in the field of emergency preparedness and defense | 17 |
| mobilization; she served with the F.C.C. until 1976; after | 18 |
| leaving the F.C.C. she was elected to several boards of | 19 |
| directors, including Motorola and Mid-Atlantic Bank in New | 20 |
| Jersey; and
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Former Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger | 22 |
| appointed Charlotte Reid to serve on the Board of Defense | 23 |
| Advisory Committee on Women in the Services in 1982; President |

| Ronald Reagan appointed her to serve on the Presidential Task | 2 |
| Force on International Private Enterprise; and she served on | 3 |
| the Board of Governors of the Hoover Institution at Stanford | 4 |
| University; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid enjoyed music, golf, and politics; | 6 |
| she played golf for many years and loved watching golf | 7 |
| tournaments; she would watch television programs that dealt | 8 |
| with local, national, and international issues, and enjoyed old | 9 |
| musicals; and she spent summers at her home in Flint, Michigan; | 10 |
| and | 11 |
| WHEREAS, She was helped the last few years in Aurora by her | 12 |
| dear neighbors, Perline Hayden and Beth Grant; and | 13 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid was preceded in death by her | 14 |
| husband, Frank Reid, and her son, Edward T. Reid; and
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Charlotte Reid is survived by her daughters, State | 16 |
| Representative Patricia (George) Reid Lindner and Susan (Todd) | 17 |
| Lewis; her son, Frank Reid; her grandchildren, Tom (Stacy) | 18 |
| Reid, Mike (Pepi) Linder, Jon (Karen) Lindner, Brooks | 19 |
| (Blueberry) Lindner, Courtney (Leather) Lindner Storrs, Frank | 20 |
| Reid, Stacy (Bill) Reid Tsozrapos, and Jonathon Lewis; and her | 21 |
| thirteen great-grandchildren; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL | 2 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we extend condolences | 3 |
| to the family and friends of Charlotte Reid at this time of | 4 |
| loss; and be it further
| 5 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 6 |
| presented to the family of Charlotte Reid as a symbol of our | 7 |
| sympathy and respect.
