| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Lafayette | 4 |
| Shaw of Danville, who passed away on February 28, 2010; and
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was elected to serve on the | 6 |
| Danville City Council in 1993; he served as alderman until | 7 |
| 1996; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Prior to his service as an alderman, Lafayette | 9 |
| Shaw served as a fixture as a custodian with the City of | 10 |
| Danville 34 years until his retirement in 1991; in 1987, he | 11 |
| retired from General Motors; he also worked at Crosspoint Human | 12 |
| Services; and
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the Carter | 14 |
| Metropolitan C.M.E. Church since 1946; he was a member of the | 15 |
| church's steward board, serving as the board's chairman for | 16 |
| about 40 years; he was president of the board of stewards for | 17 |
| the Chicago district; he served as an usher, class leader, and | 18 |
| trustee; he also earned an award from the Third Episcopal | 19 |
| District for his work with the church in 2006; and
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was involved in the planning of | 21 |
| renovations to Carver Park in Danville; and

| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a Golden Gloves boxer in the | 2 |
| 1940s; and
| 3 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was a member of the local chapter | 4 |
| of the NAACP, the MLK Celebration Committee, and the Illinois | 5 |
| Elks Lodge 147; he was honored with the past grand exalted | 6 |
| ruler degree in 1984 and also the Martin Luther King | 7 |
| Humanitarian Award; and
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw was named a special deputy sheriff | 9 |
| under Sheriff Clyde Tabor and special policeman under two | 10 |
| mayors; and
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Lafayette Shaw will be remembered by all who knew | 12 |
| and loved him as a passionate, confident, humorous, and strong | 13 |
| man whose dedication to his family and his community were | 14 |
| unmatched; therefore, be it
| 15 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 16 |
| NINETY-SIXTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 17 |
| mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | 18 |
| Lafayette Shaw; and be it further
| 19 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 20 |
| presented to the family of Lafayette Shaw as an expression of |
