| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are pleased to congratulate and thank Nora | 4 | | Power for her work with UNICEF and many other community | 5 | | organizations; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Nora Power's interest in UNICEF began when she saw | 7 | | a commercial about children in Africa who did not have enough | 8 | | to eat, proper medical attention, or the opportunity to go to | 9 | | school; after the commercial, she wondered why the kids could | 10 | | not go to school and why their parents did not feed them; | 11 | | inspired by her strong sense of right and wrong, she came up | 12 | | with the idea to ask the people she knew to donate one dollar | 13 | | toward changing a child's life forever; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Nora Power originally intended to raise $300, an | 15 | | amount that would support one child for a year; through her | 16 | | fundraising efforts and a speech that she gave to the entire | 17 | | school at morning announcements and during the students' lunch | 18 | | periods, as well as enlisting the help of the local PTA, Nora | 19 | | easily raised this amount; instead of being content with | 20 | | raising this amount, however, Nora decided to raise $900, which | 21 | | would support three children for a year; and
| 22 | | WHEREAS, With her new goal of $900 in mind, Nora Power took |

| 1 | | her speech to her Brownie Scout Troop and asked for their help; | 2 | | she went door-to-door to her neighbors and made an announcement | 3 | | at her neighborhood block party; she also told her doctors, her | 4 | | dentist, her therapists, and everyone she met about UNICEF and | 5 | | the children who need help; after beginning her campaign in the | 6 | | early spring of 2nd grade, she had raised $1,400 by the | 7 | | beginning of 3rd grade; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Emboldened and empowered by her experience with | 9 | | raising money for UNICEF, Nora Power now seeks to continue | 10 | | helping those in need; currently mulling her options, she has | 11 | | expressed an interest in wildlife projects in the Gulf of | 12 | | Mexico and the pandas of China; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Nora Power has served as an inspiration to many; | 14 | | following her example, some of the librarians at her local | 15 | | public library were inspired to go assist Nora in packing meals | 16 | | for Feed My Starving Children; she also inspired one of the | 17 | | library's youth librarians to take a trip to help the children | 18 | | of Bangladesh; and | 19 | | WHEREAS, Nora Power serves as a model of hard work, | 20 | | integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of | 21 | | Illinois; therefore, be it

| 5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 6 | | presented to Nora Power as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
