| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Chicago | 4 | | Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson, who | 5 | | tragically passed away while saving several families from a | 6 | | burning home in Chicago on November 2, 2012; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served with distinction as a | 8 | | firefighter with the Chicago Fire Department for over 30 years; | 9 | | he was the first one to arrive at a reported attic blaze in a | 10 | | home in the Gage Park neighborhood of Chicago, and thanks to | 11 | | his efforts, many lives were saved that day; however, Capt. | 12 | | Johnson was tragically killed as a result of injuries sustained | 13 | | in the fire; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson served as a volunteer in | 15 | | 2001 to aid in rescue efforts at Ground Zero after the 9/11 | 16 | | terrorist attacks; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the recipient of the | 18 | | Firefighting Medal of Honor in 2007 after rescuing children | 19 | | from a building in Chicago; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In addition to his duties as a firefighter, Capt. | 21 | | Herbert Johnson supported a camp that helped burn victims, |

| 1 | | cooked for various charity events, and drove fire engines in | 2 | | parades for the Chicago Fire Department; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Capt. Herbert Johnson was the devoted husband of | 4 | | Susan; the loving father of Cpl. Thomas (USMC), Laurie, and | 5 | | Michael "Mickey"; the dear brother of Julie (the late Douglas) | 6 | | Marcinek, Mary Cay, Peggy (Dave) Ladd, John, James (Theresa), | 7 | | Ted (Ruth), and Terry; the cherished son of the late Herbert J. | 8 | | and Joan; and the dear uncle, cousin, and friend of many; | 9 | | therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 11 | | NINETY-SEVENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 12 | | we mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of | 13 | | Chicago Fire Department Captain Herbert "Herbie" Johnson; and | 14 | | be it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to the family of Capt. Herbert Johnson as an | 17 | | expression of our sympathy.
