| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Maurice | 4 | | C. Houston of Chicago, who passed away on October 28, 2013; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was born in Chicago on April 20, | 6 | | 1959; and
| 7 | | WHEREAS, Maurice Houston signed with Granny White and | 8 | | Burning White Productions, a division of Columbia and Epic | 9 | | Records, at the age of 19; he started Studio "M" in 1983 in the | 10 | | family basement and partnered with lifelong friend and business | 11 | | partner Roger Simmons; together they moved Studio "M" to | 12 | | Washington Street in Waukegan in 1991 and formed Maurog | 13 | | Records; he worked with many local Chicago artists such as Lou | 14 | | Pride, Mauree', Joan Collaso, Carmen Stokes, Walter Thomas, Ben | 15 | | Jammmin' Johnson, Lonnie "Mr. Blues" Givens, and many more; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "Mo", Maurice Houston was | 17 | | a talented musician and producer who worked with such greats as | 18 | | Michael Henderson, Ray Parker Jr., Phyllis Hyman, Sonny Sitt, | 19 | | Chaka Khan, Howard Hewett, Cherrelle, Alexander O'Neil, Jean | 20 | | Carne, George Johnson of "The Brothers Johnson", The | 21 | | Temptations Review with Dennis Edwards, and many more; as | 22 | | producer he has recorded with the Staple Singers, the Dells, |

| 1 | | the Friends of Distinction, and Superior Movement; he | 2 | | co-produced the first 2 albums of jazz guitarist great Nick | 3 | | Colionne and many more world famous musicians; and
| 4 | | WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was the offspring of music and | 5 | | entertainment royalty; his grandfather was Clarence Davis and | 6 | | his grandmother, Ernestine "Tiny" Davis, is enshrined in the | 7 | | International Jazz Hall of Fame in Kansas City, Missouri; his | 8 | | mother, Dorothy Harney, was an accomplished musician as well | 9 | | and was the first female electric bassist in the Midwest; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Maurice Houston was preceded in death by his | 11 | | mother, Dorothy Harney; his father, Charles Houston; his | 12 | | step-father, John Harney; his sisters, Sharon Griffin, Lois | 13 | | Houston, and Billie Jean Houston; and his brother, Ronell | 14 | | Houston; and | 15 | | WHEREAS, Maurice Houston is survived by his son, Charles C. | 16 | | Houston; his brother, Steve (Debbie) Houston; his adopted | 17 | | brother, Mike Barbee; his niece, Portia Griffen; and his | 18 | | nephews, Steven James and Brian James; therefore, be it
| 19 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 20 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 21 | | we mourn the passing of Maurice C. Houston, and extend our | 22 | | sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew |
