| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Lieutenant Colonel | 4 | | Katherine Hayes of Joliet on the occasion of her 100th birthday | 5 | | on October 8, 2014; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes was born in 1914 on the Baltz | 7 | | family farm in Troy Township, Shorewood; she attended Cathedral | 8 | | of St. Raymond Catholic School and graduated from Joliet | 9 | | Township High School in the early 1930s; she graduated from | 10 | | Passavant Memorial Hospital (now Northwestern Memorial | 11 | | Hospital) in Chicago in 1935 and earned her Bachelor of Science | 12 | | in Nursing from the University of Minnesota in 1940; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Lt. Col. | 14 | | Hayes joined the Army as Chief Nurse of the United States Army | 15 | | 12th General Hospital in February of 1942; her experiences | 16 | | included combat service from 1942 to 1945 in North Africa and | 17 | | Italy, during which time she earned 5 battle stars; Chief | 18 | | Nurse, Ashford General Army Hospital at White Sulphur Springs, | 19 | | West Virginia from 1945 to 1946; Deputy Chief, Nursing | 20 | | Division, Office of the Surgeon General from 1946 to 1950; | 21 | | Chief Nurse, Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, D.C. | 22 | | from 1951 to 1954; Chief Nurse, Landstuhl Medical Center, | 23 | | Germany from 1954 to 1957; Chief Nursing Service at Fort George |

| 1 | | G. Meade, Maryland in 1957; and Chief Nurse, Nurse Management | 2 | | Office and Nurse Instructor at the US Army Hospital, Fort Ord, | 3 | | California from 1957 to
1961; she retired from the Army Nurses | 4 | | Corp in 1962; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes's contributions to health care and | 6 | | the nursing industry led to such advancements as separate | 7 | | pediatric and female wards, centralized immunizations and | 8 | | injection treatment clinics, modern intensive care units, and | 9 | | the publication of professional and technical manuals related | 10 | | to nursing resulting in increased efficiencies and reduced | 11 | | costs; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1985, Lt. Col. Hayes was a generous benefactor | 13 | | towards establishing the Army Medical Department Museum to | 14 | | ensure the history and reputation of the Army Medical | 15 | | Department for future generations; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Lt. Col. Hayes was selected as a member of the | 17 | | esteemed Order of Military Medical Merit - Medal #357; the | 18 | | award recognizes United States Army medical personnel who have | 19 | | demonstrated the highest standards of integrity and moral | 20 | | character, and who have made significant contributions to the | 21 | | Army Medical Department Center; only 357 individuals have been | 22 | | recognized to receive this award; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | 2 | | NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that | 3 | | we congratulate Lieutenant Colonel Katherine Hayes on her 100th | 4 | | birthday, thank her for her service to her country, and wish | 5 | | many more wonderful years; and be it further
