AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 1226

2    AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 1226 by replacing
3everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4    "Section 5. The Department of Public Health Powers and
5Duties Law of the Civil Administrative Code of Illinois is
6amended by adding Section 2310-665 as follows:
 
7    (20 ILCS 2310/2310-665 new)
8    Sec. 2310-665. Sudden, unexpected death in epilepsy
9awareness program. The General Assembly finds and declares
10that:
11        (1) Sudden, unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a
12    condition in which typically young or middle-aged
13    individuals with epilepsy die without a clear cause and is
14    generally defined by the medical community as a sudden,
15    unexpected, non-traumatic, non-drowning death in an
16    otherwise healthy individual with epilepsy, where the

1    postmortem examination does not reveal an anatomic or
2    toxicologic cause for the death.
3        (2) SUDEP is believed to account for up to 38% of
4    deaths in people with epilepsy.
5        (3) Autopsy plays a key role in determining the
6    diagnosis of SUDEP, yet the Institute of Medicine has found
7    that SUDEP may be underreported for several reasons,
8    including a lack of awareness about SUDEP among medical
9    examiners and coroners.".
