2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of James H. Reed of Arlington Heights, who |
4 | | passed away on February 19, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, James Reed was born on December 28, 1921, in |
6 | | Chicago; his parents were Calvin M. and Rachel B. Reed; he was |
7 | | the beloved husband of the late Dolores M. Reed for 61 years; |
8 | | and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, James Reed was a proud member of the United States |
10 | | Marine Corps during World War II; he joined 3 days after the |
11 | | bombing of Pearl Harbor and served with distinction as an |
12 | | assault radioman throughout the South Pacific as a member of |
13 | | the 3rd Battalion, 22nd Regiment; he earned the rank of |
14 | | corporal and participated in 3 assault landings in the Marshall |
15 | | Islands; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, James Reed will be remembered for his considerable |
17 | | educational and career achievements; after attaining the rank |
18 | | of Eagle Scout in high school, he earned his bachelor's degree |
19 | | in mathematics with a minor in physics and engineering from |
20 | | Eastern Illinois University and his master's degree in |
21 | | personnel with a minor in statistics from the University of |
22 | | Wisconsin; and

1 | | WHEREAS, Throughout his life, James Reed held positions as |
2 | | corporate manager, senior systems analyst, and industrial |
3 | | engineer for such companies as the Ford Motor Company, |
4 | | Whirlpool, and Fingerhut; he also served as a guest lecturer at |
5 | | Purdue University; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, James Reed enjoyed square dancing and calling, |
7 | | stamp collecting, being a "winter Texan", traveling in his RV, |
8 | | and watching the Chicago Bears; as a square dancer, he was on |
9 | | the board of the Metropolitan Chicago Association of Square |
10 | | Dancers as a director and as 2nd vice president and convention |
11 | | chairman; he and his wife traveled extensively throughout the |
12 | | United States as square dance ambassadors and most notably |
13 | | traveled to Russia as part of a cultural exchange, where they |
14 | | represented square dancing as the official American folk dance |
15 | | of Illinois; and |
16 | | WHEREAS, James Reed is survived by his daughters, Carol L. |
17 | | Bolka, Catherine A. Reed, and Nancy E. Reed, and his |
18 | | granddaughters, Rachel E. Bolka and Laura B. |
19 | | Gardzelewski-Batterton; therefore, be it

20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
21 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with |
22 | | his family and friends, the passing of James H. Reed; and be it |
