2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Marvin Wright, who passed away on August |
4 | | 3, 2013; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was born on May 20, 1917 in Fulton, |
6 | | Alabama; his parents were Marvin Wright, Sr. and Almeda (nee |
7 | | Falconer) Wright; he married Katie (nee Harper) Wright on March |
8 | | 21, 1952; and
|
9 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright earned his Bachelor's Degree from |
10 | | Xavier University in New Orleans, Louisiana and his Master's |
11 | | Degree plus 30 from the University of Illinois at |
12 | | Urbana-Champaign; and
|
13 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright proudly served in the United States |
14 | | Army as a staff sergeant in the European Theater of Operations |
15 | | during the World War II battles and campaigns at Normandy, |
16 | | Northern France, the Ardennes, the Rhineland, and Central |
17 | | Europe, which began on "D-Day" on June 6, 1944; his service |
18 | | gained him many decorations and citations, including the Silver |
19 | | Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory |
20 | | Medal; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a premier educator and |
|

1 | | administrator, having served with distinction as an elementary |
2 | | school teacher and principal in East St. Louis School District |
3 | | 189 until his retirement from the district on June 30, 1979; he |
4 | | later served as manager of the Illinois Attorney General's East |
5 | | St. Louis Office; during the 1990 Census, he served as an |
6 | | official at the Belleville, Illinois Census Office; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a professional musician with |
8 | | such notables as Clark Terry and others; he was a jazz devotee |
9 | | who was also studious and scholarly; he loved to read and |
10 | | subscribed to many scholarly magazines and men's fashion |
11 | | magazines; he was also known and admired for his dapper manner |
12 | | of attire and impeccable grooming; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was a member of Veterans of Foreign |
14 | | Wars Post 3480, where he served as commander of the post and as |
15 | | quartermaster of the post for several terms; he was also a |
16 | | member of the American Legion and served as inaugural chairman |
17 | | of the State Community Board, president of the Senior Citizens |
18 | | Organization, president of the School District 189 Principals' |
19 | | Organization, and Boy Scout leader; he was a member of Phi |
20 | | Delta Kappa; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright was preceded in death by his |
22 | | parents; his sister, Blanche (nee Wright) Dotson; his nephew, |
23 | | Thomas Dotson; and many of his cousins; and |
|

1 | | WHEREAS, Marvin Wright is survived by his wife, Dr. Katie |
2 | | Harper Wright; his step-daughter, Virginia Jordan; his |
3 | | granddaughter, Diana Kaye Jordan; and his many cousins, |
4 | | friends, and colleagues; therefore, be it
|
5 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL |
6 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his |
7 | | family and friends, mourn the passing of Marvin Wright; and be |
8 | | it further
|
9 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
10 | | presented to the family of Marvin Wright as an expression of |
11 | | our sympathy.
