2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Dr. John Clinton Schweitzer of Peoria, |
4 | | who passed away on May 4, 2014; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was born in Chicago on October 18, |
6 | | 1935 to Ellen (nee Boughton) and John Jacob Schweitzer; he |
7 | | graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in Battle |
8 | | Creek, Michigan in 1953 and earned his Bachelor of Science from |
9 | | Purdue University in 1957 and his Master of Arts from Western |
10 | | Michigan University in 1959; he received his Ph.D. in 1974 from |
11 | | the University of North Carolina; and
|
12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer held the rank of Emeritus Professor |
13 | | in the Department of Communications at Bradley University in |
14 | | Peoria, where he was department chairman from 1993 to 1999; he |
15 | | also taught at Texas Tech University for 9 years, where he was |
16 | | Director of Advertising/Public Relations, and, later, Director |
17 | | of Graduate Studies in the School of Mass Communications and |
18 | | Professor of Communication Studies; he spent the 1999-2000 |
19 | | academic year in Bulgaria as a Fulbright Scholar in the Faculty |
20 | | of Journalism, Sofia University, "St. Clement Ohridski", and at |
21 | | the American University in Bulgaria; he was a Visiting Scholar |
22 | | at the Hong Baptist University from January to May of 2007 and |
23 | | lectured at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, |

1 | | Shanghai International Studies University, and Oxford |
2 | | University in the United Kingdom; and
|
3 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer began his newspaper career in 1960 |
4 | | as the personnel manager of Lindsay-Schaub Newspapers in |
5 | | Decatur; he moved to the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer and News as |
6 | | personnel director from 1964 to 1970 and was publisher of the |
7 | | Terre Haute (Ind.) Tribune-Star for 3 years; he also served as |
8 | | Vice-President of Belden Associates and worked for |
9 | | Bozell-Jacobs in Dallas, Texas, where he was an adjunct |
10 | | professor of marketing at the University of Texas at Dallas; in |
11 | | 1998, he was one of the authors of a successful grant request |
12 | | to the Pew Civic Journalism Fund that won a national award, and |
13 | | he received grants from the Freedom Forum, the Voice of |
14 | | America, and others; he participated in workshops and seminars |
15 | | conducted by the Pointer Institute and the American Press |
16 | | Institute, authored or co-authored more than 40 refereed |
17 | | journal articles, and presented more than 50 invited and |
18 | | refereed research papers and addresses at conventions and |
19 | | professional meetings in the United States, Bulgaria, Canada, |
20 | | China, Czech Republic, England, Hungary, Ireland, Japan, |
21 | | Russia, and Poland; he had been a member of the editorial |
22 | | review board of the Newspaper Research Journal since its |
23 | | inception and served on the editorial board of Forum on Public |
24 | | Policy, a journal of Oxford University; he was editor of the |
25 | | Southwestern Mass Communication Journal and was involved in |

1 | | many scholarly organizations, including the Association for |
2 | | Education in Journalism, where he was the head of the media |
3 | | management division and co-chair of the Council of Divisions, |
4 | | the American Advertising Federation, the International |
5 | | Communication Association, The Korean Marketing Institute, and |
6 | | the Marketing in Asia Group of Korea; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was active in the Peoria Area World |
8 | | Affairs Council, serving as President in 2012, the League of |
9 | | Women Voters, and was on the advisory board of "Look It's My |
10 | | Book!", where he served as a grant writer; he was also active |
11 | | in Democratic politics, working on Senator Dave Koehler's |
12 | | campaigns; and |
13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer was preceded in death by his |
14 | | parents, and by one brother; and
|
15 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Schweitzer is survived by his wife, Nancy; 3 |
16 | | daughters, Lisa (Chuck) Harman-Wakefield, Sue (Dave) |
17 | | Meyerhofer, and Sara (Michael) Schweitzer-Mealey; 3 |
18 | | step-daughters, Kathy (David) Tovson, Karen (Eric) Patton, and |
19 | | Christina (Mark) Kleiser-Zalesky; 13 grandchildren; 2 |
20 | | great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Peter (Elaine) and David |
21 | | (Nancy); therefore, be it

1 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of |
2 | | Dr. John Clinton Schweitzer, and extend our sincere condolences |
3 | | to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be |
4 | | it further

5 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
6 | | presented to the family of Dr. Schweitzer as an expression of |
7 | | our deepest sympathy.
