2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | ||||||
3 | learn of the death of Tom Meyer of Rockford; and
| ||||||
4 | WHEREAS, Tom Meyer was a Rockford native; he was a graduate | ||||||
5 | of Auburn High School, Illinois State University, and the John | ||||||
6 | Marshall Law School in Chicago; and
| ||||||
7 | WHEREAS, In 1979, Tom Meyer won a seat on the Rockford City | ||||||
8 | Council as Third Ward alderman, replacing future Mayor John | ||||||
9 | McNamara; in 1981, he helped McNamara in his successful bid for | ||||||
10 | mayor; during his tenure on the City Council, he helped | ||||||
11 | negotiate with Democrats and Republicans to get ordinances | ||||||
12 | passed as the City made its way out of the early 1980s | ||||||
13 | recession that pushed the Rockford jobless rate at one point to | ||||||
14 | 25%; and
| ||||||
15 | WHEREAS, After serving 2 terms as alderman, Tom Meyer | ||||||
16 | became a political savant, helping with Mayor McNamara's | ||||||
17 | reelection in 1985; he subsequently worked on the 3 mayoral | ||||||
18 | campaigns of Charles Box and the mayoral campaign of Doug | ||||||
19 | Scott; he most recently served as an adviser to the successful | ||||||
20 | City Council bid of Tom McNamara, the son of John McNamara; and
| ||||||
21 | WHEREAS, Tom Meyer served as an attorney for 38 years with |

| |||||||
1 | several different partners; most recently, he worked at Meyer | ||||||
2 | and Horning, a full-service law firm representing | ||||||
3 | corporations, small businesses, and entrepreneurs in areas of | ||||||
4 | real estate, personal injury, and family law; for more than 20 | ||||||
5 | years, he spent much of his time representing the Rockford | ||||||
6 | Housing Authority; the past 5 years of his practice included | ||||||
7 | his son, Nicholas; and
| ||||||
8 | WHEREAS, Tom Meyer was an avid Chicago White Sox fan who | ||||||
9 | coached youth soccer, basketball, and baseball games when he | ||||||
10 | was younger and played thousands of rounds of golf; and | ||||||
11 | WHEREAS, Tom Meyer is survived by his mother, Ellen; his | ||||||
12 | wife, Lydia, whom he married in 1993; his sons, Nathan, | ||||||
13 | Nicholas, and Noah; 6 grandchildren; 2 brothers; and his | ||||||
14 | sister; therefore, be it

15 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | ||||||
16 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we, along with his | ||||||
17 | family and friends, mourn the passing of Tom Meyer; and be it | ||||||
18 | further

19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
20 | presented to the family of Tom Meyer as an expression of our | ||||||
21 | sympathy.
