2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to |
3 | | learn of the death of Wilma Lucille Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, |
4 | | who passed away on May 25, 2014; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Wilma Smith was born on March 20, 1925 in Wausau, |
6 | | Wisconsin to Otto Ihlenfeld and Ariel Cottrell; and
|
7 | | WHEREAS, Wilma Smith earned her high school equivalence and |
8 | | an associate's degree in Business Administration while in her |
9 | | 50s, as she had to leave school and work to help support her |
10 | | family during the Great Depression; she also took pride in her |
11 | | support of the war effort during World War II, moving to Los |
12 | | Angeles and becoming a skilled assembler of the precision |
13 | | instruments used in the American heavy bombers that helped |
14 | | liberate Europe; she married Harry H. Smith near the end of the |
15 | | war; and

16 | | WHEREAS, In the 1950s, Wilma Smith and her family relocated |
17 | | to Flint, Michigan, where she worked as an emergency room ward |
18 | | clerk at St. Joseph Hospital, then as a pediatric ward clerk at |
19 | | McLaren General Hospital; she also worked in a variety of |
20 | | service occupations and volunteered later in life, helping |
21 | | children and other seniors; and
