| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of
Thomas D. Nyhan of Lisle, who passed away | 4 | | on November 7, 2014; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan graduated from the Loyola University | 6 | | Chicago School of Law in 1958 and joined the Chicago law firm | 7 | | of Pope, Ballard,
Shepard & Fowle, Ltd., where he became one of | 8 | | the premier workers'
compensation defense attorneys in the | 9 | | State; during
his 35-year career with Pope, Ballard, Shepard & | 10 | | Fowle, he became senior partner
and created a formidable group | 11 | | of workers' compensation
attorneys; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, In 1992, Thomas Nyhan went on to become a founding
| 13 | | shareholder of Nyhan, Pfister, Bambrick & Kinzie, P.C.; he | 14 | | retired in 1994 but continued to consult with members of the
| 15 | | firm on important issues over the years; with his guidance,
| 16 | | Nyhan, Bambrick, Kinzie & Lowry has grown from a 9-attorney
| 17 | | workers' compensation defense firm to a premier full-service
| 18 | | defense firm handling multi-state civil litigation and | 19 | | Medicare
Secondary Payer compliance service in addition to | 20 | | workers'
compensation defense and employment; and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan served for many years as the workers'
| 22 | | compensation counsel to the Illinois Chamber of Commerce,

| 1 | | providing his expertise and guidance on the law in negotiations
| 2 | | and representation of employers in a professional and effective
| 3 | | manner; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, In 1982, Thomas Nyhan and his late wife, Donna, | 5 | | created a case precedent
resource called Q-Dex for the
Illinois | 6 | | workers' compensation community and, until recently, Thomas | 7 | | Nyhan remained active in Q-Dex, which is now presided over by | 8 | | his
daughter, Suzanne; and | 9 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan was very proud of the fact that he | 10 | | had read every workers' compensation decision of the | 11 | | Commission, the appellate courts, and the supreme courts for
| 12 | | over 50 years; and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan was active in numerous professional
| 14 | | organizations, serving on the Attorney Registration and
| 15 | | Disciplinary Commission of the Illinois Supreme Court, as | 16 | | Executive Secretary of the Illinois
Self-Insurers Association, | 17 | | and as an Officer and Director of the
National Council of | 18 | | Self-Insurers; he also was a Fellow of the
American Bar | 19 | | Association and a member of the Association of
Trial Lawyers of | 20 | | America, the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois
State Bar | 21 | | Association, and the International Association of
Industrial | 22 | | Accident Boards and Commissions; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Thomas Nyhan is survived by his wife, Joan Nyhan; | 2 | | his children, Thomas C. Nyhan, Esq., Larry J. Nyhan, Esq., | 3 | | Dennis J.
Nyhan, and Suzanne M. Nyhan, Esq.; his | 4 | | daughters-in-law, Beth Nyhan,
Esq., Yukiko Nyhan, and Melanie | 5 | | Murphy; his grandchildren, Lauren
Nyhan Macklis, Jason | 6 | | Macklis, M.D., Daniel and Lisa Nyhan,
and Brendan, Dylan, | 7 | | Nicole, Patrick, Megan, Katherine, and Kara
Nyhan; his | 8 | | great-granddaughter, Emily Macklis; and his step-children, | 9 | | grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-EIGHTH GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | Thomas D. Nyhan, and we extend our sincere condolences to his | 13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 14 | | further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
| 16 | | presented to the family of Thomas Nyhan as an expression of our
| 17 | | deepest sympathy.
