| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Karl Nagel of Lake Forest, who passed | 4 | | away on January 13, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was born in Ingolstadt, Germany to | 6 | | Maria Barbara Kogel and Georg Friedrick Nagel on February 28, | 7 | | 1912; as a young boy in Bavaria, he enjoyed swimming in the | 8 | | Danube River and hiking into the nearby forests with friends; | 9 | | he enjoyed playing his mandolin, watching cowboy movies on | 10 | | Saturdays, and dreaming of going to America; after graduating | 11 | | from Lutherschule at the age of 14, he studied horticulture and | 12 | | served a 3-year apprenticeship in a large conservatory in | 13 | | Berlin; at the age of 19, he joined his brother, Max, in | 14 | | Chicago; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, After his arrival in Chicago, Karl Nagel answered | 16 | | an ad in a German newspaper for a manager of a commercial | 17 | | greenhouse in Lake Forest; he got the job and also met his | 18 | | first wife, Cecilia Studeny, working as a cook next door; they | 19 | | worked as a couple for 3 years in homes in Lake Forest and | 20 | | Highland Park; and | 21 | | WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was encouraged to try carpentry; his | 22 | | first job was at Ft. Sheridan, where German prisoners of war |

| 1 | | were already arriving for detention; a year later, he was | 2 | | building his first home in Deerfield for his wife and 2 | 3 | | children; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Karl Nagel eventually purchased land in West Lake | 5 | | Forest, where he built his millwork shop and a small home for | 6 | | his family; Lake Forest Millwork was soon known for its fine | 7 | | craftsmanship and fair dealings; he crafted the front doors and | 8 | | an altar for St. Patrick's Catholic Church; he eventually | 9 | | joined his son, Karl F. Nagel in the construction business and | 10 | | "Nagel and Nagel" built many homes and developments in Lake | 11 | | Forest, Lake Bluff, Waukegan, and Gurnee; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, After the passing of his first wife, Karl Nagel | 13 | | retired and spent time in his beloved gardens and on fishing | 14 | | trips with family and friends; at the age of 91, he married | 15 | | Joanne Gustafson, a neighbor and friend of many years and they | 16 | | were together in their own home until his 100th birthday; and
| 17 | | WHEREAS, Karl Nagel was the husband of Josephine and the | 18 | | late Cecilia; the father of Ruth (the late Col. Arthur) Laehr | 19 | | and Karl F. (Barbara) Nagel; the beloved grandfather of Laura | 20 | | (Mark) Ashburn, Linda (Mike) Antonio, Lisa (Jim) Branton, | 21 | | Matthew (Janet) Nagel, Blair (Becky) Nagel, and Joy (Mark) | 22 | | McGreevy; the adored great-grandchildren are Jennifer | 23 | | (Brandon) Sales, Emily and Dan Ashburn, Andrew (Kristyn) |
