| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Philip T. | 4 | | Kalayil, who passed away on March 13, 2017 at the age of 86; | 5 | | and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil always desired to immigrate to the | 7 | | United States; he left Kerala, India in January of 1956 and | 8 | | arrived in Chicago in March of 1956; and
| 9 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil earned a graduate degree in | 10 | | sociology from Loyola University and began working with | 11 | | Catholic Charities; he joined the City of Chicago's Department | 12 | | of Human Services and served as the Assistant Director of | 13 | | Emergency Services until his retirement in 1992; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil worked with the Crossroads | 15 | | International Center, organizing activities for international | 16 | | students; he volunteered building institutions in the India | 17 | | American community; in the early 1970s, he was one of the | 18 | | founders of Asian Forum, a pan-Asian organization that looked | 19 | | at strengthening the Asian American coalition of Chicago, where | 20 | | his work led to many of today's Asian American and South Asian | 21 | | American civic organizations; he was also very instrumental in | 22 | | founding the Indo-American Democratic Organization in 1981, |

| 1 | | which is one of the oldest political organizations in Chicago; | 2 | | and | 3 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil was a shining example of the | 4 | | immigrant contribution to the strength of Illinois and the | 5 | | United States; his legacy in building the foundation for Asian | 6 | | American political participation in the Chicago area will be | 7 | | long-lasting; his commitment to coalition building and | 8 | | pan-Asian cooperation has created a lasting impression on the | 9 | | Illinois Asian American community for generations to come; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil was preceded in death by his | 11 | | daughter, Lisa; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Philip Kalayil is survived by his wife of 67 | 13 | | years, Annamma; his children, Tom, Sales, and Ann, along with | 14 | | their spouses; his son-in-law, Tom; and his grandchildren; | 15 | | therefore, be it
| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 17 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 18 | | mourn the passing of Philip T. Kalayil, and extend our sincere | 19 | | condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved | 20 | | him; and be it further
