| 1 | | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives wish to congratulate Joseph Glik on receiving | 4 | | the Chamber of Commerce of Southwestern Madison County's 2017 | 5 | | Citizen of the Year Award; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik and his family have been an integral part | 7 | | of the business community of Southwestern Madison County for | 8 | | over 120 years and, with Glik's, their chain of clothing | 9 | | stores, the pillar of the county's retail business world; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Since 1897, the Glik family has grown a successful | 11 | | retail business; what began with selling merchandise from a | 12 | | horse drawn wagon has grown to include 60 stores in ten states | 13 | | with over 500 associates; Glik's is currently ranked as the | 14 | | 14th oldest retailer in the United States; and
| 15 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik took over the active management of Glik's | 16 | | Clothing Store in Madison after he served in the United States | 17 | | Navy and graduated from Washington University; shortly | 18 | | thereafter, he was asked to open a second location in Granite | 19 | | City; that was the beginning of Glik's multi-store operations; | 20 | | and
| 21 | | WHEREAS, Over the next 25 years, Joe Glik grew the business |

| 1 | | to 12 stores; he then recruited his children; after his | 2 | | children acclimated to the family business, he turned over | 3 | | active management to them; however, he has too much energy to | 4 | | completely retire; he still travels with his sons to visit the | 5 | | stores and talk with the managers, clerks, and customers; he | 6 | | always asks how the business can improve and offers his | 7 | | impressions of what each store is doing right and wrong; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik has always maintained that he and his | 9 | | family are indebted to Madison and Granite City, and he has | 10 | | instilled that belief in his children; Glik's corporate office | 11 | | is still located in Granite City; every piece of promotional | 12 | | material that is sent to New York, Los Angeles, or anywhere | 13 | | else is proudly marked with the Nameoki Road address in Granite | 14 | | City; Southwestern Madison County is where the business got its | 15 | | start, and it is where the family intends to remain; and
| 16 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik has made significant contributions to his | 17 | | community; he served as Chairman of the Tri-Cities United Way's | 18 | | 1965 Fund Drive and served as President of its Board of | 19 | | Directors; he has served on the St. Elizabeth Foundation and on | 20 | | the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce; he | 21 | | established a Breast Cancer screening fund for underserved | 22 | | women; and he built community parks in both Edwardsville and | 23 | | Highland; and

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik has received the Distinguished Business | 2 | | Alumni Award from the Washington University School of Business, | 3 | | the De La Roche Award from the Board of Directors at St. | 4 | | Elizabeth Hospital, and the Chamber of Commerce's Lifetime | 5 | | Achievement "Balance" Award; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Joe Glik built a family business into a major | 7 | | retail operation but has never forgotten where he came from; | 8 | | therefore, be it
| 9 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 10 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 11 | | congratulate Joseph Glik on receiving the Chamber of Commerce | 12 | | of Southwestern Madison County's 2017 Citizen of the Year | 13 | | Award, and we recognize his achievements and dedication to | 14 | | Southwestern Madison County; and be it further
| 15 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 16 | | presented to Joe Glik as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
