| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | 3 | | Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Herbert | 4 | | Lee Hedgeman, who passed away on December 29, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was born in Chicago to Fannie Mae | 6 | | Hedgeman on November 7, 1928; he attended Chicago Public | 7 | | Schools and, at the age of 16, joined the United States Army | 8 | | and served during World War II and the Korean War; after World | 9 | | War II ended, he remained in Germany performing the saxophone | 10 | | throughout the country; he studied pre-law at Wilberforce | 11 | | University, where in 1954 he began a lifelong involvement with | 12 | | the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity; he married Tricka Harris in | 13 | | 1971; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman worked as a case worker with the | 15 | | Cook County Department of Public Aid; he then began a career in | 16 | | real estate and became known as a "blockbuster" for his talent | 17 | | of integrating various neighborhoods in Chicago; he was the | 18 | | first African-American realtor at the Rubloff real estate | 19 | | company; creating economic development for underdeveloped
| 20 | | communities was a major passion of his; throughout his life he | 21 | | was passionate about
helping the African-American community; | 22 | | and |

| 1 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman purchased the Sportsman's Inn | 2 | | Motel in 1973; he had a 50-year career in business and invested | 3 | | in numerous properties in Illinois, Michigan, and Georgia; he | 4 | | was the sponsor of WVON's "The Bob
Shaw" show and one of the | 5 | | founders of We Can
Inc.; and
| 6 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman started the Herbert Hedgeman | 7 | | Foundation to provide students with financial assistance for | 8 | | their
Wilberforce University education; he was known in his
| 9 | | community for his generosity and kindness; he
thrived to bring | 10 | | out the best in people and help
them become successful in their | 11 | | endeavors; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman was preceded in death by his | 13 | | wife, Tricka; and
| 14 | | WHEREAS, Herbert Hedgeman is survived by his son, Kenneth | 15 | | Hedgeman;
his daughters, Denita Hedgeman,
Kori Scurlock, TK | 16 | | Karadzovski, and Cici Foster
(Kevin); his grandchildren, | 17 | | Avante and
Dante Hedgeman and Diamond and Imani Foster;
his | 18 | | great-grandchild, Ayanna Hedgeman; his faithful dog,
Ace; and | 19 | | numerous cousins and friends; therefore, be it
| 20 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE | 21 | | HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | 22 | | mourn the passing of Herbert Lee Hedgeman, and extend our |
