| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of W. Robert Elghammer M.D., who passed away | 4 | | on December 2, 2016; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer was born in Chicago to Dr. H. | 6 | | William and Anna Stena (Peterson) Elghammer on June 26, 1923; | 7 | | he married Doris E. Postlewaite on September 11, 1948; and
| 8 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer received his undergraduate medical | 9 | | education at the University of Chicago and interned at St. | 10 | | Luke's Hospital in Chicago; he served a pediatric residency at | 11 | | Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago and completed a | 12 | | fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota under | 13 | | world-renowned pediatrician, Dr. Benjamin Spock; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer served in the United States Army | 15 | | from 1943 to 1946 and then with the United States Public Health | 16 | | Service in Alaska; he began his pediatric practice in Danville | 17 | | on January 16, 1953, retiring in 2011; and | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1956, Dr. Elghammer spearheaded a drive to | 19 | | inoculate all the children of Vermilion County from polio; he | 20 | | was known to provide free vaccinations from other diseases to | 21 | | children from families who could not afford to pay for them; he |

| 1 | | was instrumental in the founding of the Vermilion County Mental | 2 | | Health Center and the Intensive Care Nursery at Danville Lake | 3 | | View Hospital; and | 4 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer was a founding board member of | 5 | | Vermilion County Head Start and was the founding President of | 6 | | the Vermilion County Historical Museum Society; he was a member | 7 | | of First Presbyterian Church, the Danville Country Club, the | 8 | | American Medical Association, the Illinois State Medical | 9 | | Association, and the Vermilion County Medical Society; and
| 10 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer was preceded in death by his wife, | 11 | | Doris; his son, Eric; his parents; and his brother, Richard; | 12 | | and
| 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Elghammer is survived by his children, James, | 14 | | Richard, Eric, and Sally (Hornett), and his grandchildren, Dean | 15 | | and Ellen; therefore, be it
| 16 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 17 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 18 | | W. Robert Elghammer M.D., and extend our sincere condolences to | 19 | | his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 20 | | further
