| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Dr. Jean A. Bowen, who passed away on | 4 | | September 16, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was born in Joliet to John and Helen | 6 | | (Olson) Gerber on February 11, 1942; she grew up in Fairbury | 7 | | and graduated from Fairbury-Cropsey High School; she received a | 8 | | Bachelor of Arts from Millikin University, a Master of Arts | 9 | | from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a | 10 | | Doctorate of Education from Loyola University; and
| 11 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen began her career in education at Johns | 12 | | Hill Junior High School in Decatur; she then was a guidance | 13 | | counselor at Centennial High School in Champaign; she moved to | 14 | | Elgin and taught at Abbott Junior High School; she was a | 15 | | guidance counselor, assistant principal, and head of the Fine | 16 | | Arts Academy at Larkin High School; finally, she was the first | 17 | | principal of South Elgin High School; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was member of the Delta Delta Delta | 19 | | sorority, the Elgin Junior Women's Club, and the Elgin Service | 20 | | Board; she was on the board of the Community Crisis Center, the | 21 | | board of the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame, and the board of the | 22 | | U-46 Educational Foundation; she was a longtime member of |

| 1 | | Wesley United Methodist Church in Elgin, where she was part of | 2 | | the choir and served in many capacities; and
| 3 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen was preceded in death by her parents; | 4 | | and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Bowen is survived by her husband of 53 years, | 6 | | Gary: her sons, John T. (Jori) and David A. (Christine): her | 7 | | grandchildren, Camille, Drew, and Keira; her sister, Janet | 8 | | (Tom) Mann; her brothers, John Gerber and Paul (Sharon) Gerber; | 9 | | and many nephews and nieces; therefore, be it
| 10 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 11 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 12 | | Dr. Jean A. Bowen, and extend our sincere condolences to her | 13 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it | 14 | | further
