| 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to | 3 | | learn of the death of Carl E. Dawson, who passed away on August | 4 | | 16, 2017; and
| 5 | | WHEREAS, Carl Dawson was born in Chicago to Dorothy Bush | 6 | | and Robert Dawson on June 16, 1930; his family lived in the | 7 | | West Woodlawn and Englewood neighborhoods before moving to | 8 | | Georgetown, where he attended elementary and high school; while | 9 | | in high school, he
became a star on the track team and held the | 10 | | high jump record for many years; in his last
year, he won four | 11 | | different track honors; and
| 12 | | WHEREAS, Carl Dawson returned to Chicago to work at the | 13 | | United States Post Office; at 21 years of
age, he was drafted | 14 | | into the United States Marine Corps and was deployed to Korea | 15 | | for
two years, serving as a corporal; he was awarded the
Korean | 16 | | Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, and the | 17 | | National Defence Service
Medal; he received an honorable | 18 | | discharge in 1953 and was
transferred to the Marine Reserve | 19 | | until 1959; and
| 20 | | WHEREAS, In March of 1954, Carl Dawson returned to work at | 21 | | the post office; he married Grace J. Graves on October 6, 1954 | 22 | | and they had two sons, Carlton
and Clark, a grandson, Kyle, and |

| 1 | | a granddaughter, Clarke; and | 2 | | WHEREAS, Carl Dawson and his wife sponsored five Ethiopian | 3 | | children,
bringing them to Chicago, becoming their American | 4 | | parents, mentoring them, nurturing
them, and guiding them into | 5 | | adulthood; he also shared his home with
friends and relatives | 6 | | who were in need; and | 7 | | WHEREAS, In 1961, Carl Dawson took the federal entrance | 8 | | exam and started working for the Veterans
Administration; after | 9 | | 10 years in many positions there, he moved to the United States | 10 | | Department of Labor, where he rose to the
position of assistant | 11 | | director and received numerous awards for outstanding service; | 12 | | he returned to college and graduated from Roosevelt University | 13 | | in 1970; and | 14 | | WHEREAS, Carl Dawson served as a deacon and trustee and | 15 | | sang in the
choir at his church; he taught high school and | 16 | | college mathematics at Greater Bethesda's Saturday Free
| 17 | | School; and
| 18 | | WHEREAS, Carl Dawson was a Scout Leader, president of civic | 19 | | clubs, and a member of The Chicago
Assembly; he participated in | 20 | | Toastmaster organizations and enjoyed chess and golf; he always | 21 | | encouraged his wife, sons, and grandson to do their personal | 22 | | best; therefore, be it

| 1 | | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL | 2 | | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | 3 | | Carl E. Dawson, and extend our sincere condolences to his | 4 | | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | 5 | | further
| 6 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | 7 | | presented to the family of Carl Dawson as an expression of our | 8 | | deepest sympathy.
